I'm here to report a problem, and a serious one. There is a scientology video ad on my hubs and the hubs of many. This is an outrage!

It's starting to become obvious that this site is doing this purposefuly. I'm not writing for scientology affiliates!

    Hubpages is a joke.

Scientology has been launching quite an extensive campaign on AdWords for a while, they've also switched to showing ads based not exclusively on content, but also on viewer profiles. (Yes, the Google is watching you.) Therefore, you may be seeing Scientology videos as a consequence of your own viewing habits, although its more likely a consequence of the fact that Scientology has simply thrown a lot of money at AdWords lately.

LOL Hope, we got an ignorant conspiracy theorist here, logic and reason have no place smile

Hauntyposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Misha, logic belongs to the past. It is a tool by which you can make sense of the world you experience and which helps you to decide what is what. And this is a state that you need to feel secure, isn't it.

However, if you depend on logic too much you are confined to analyzing the past and it prevents you from thinking ahead. And without thinking ahead you cannot progress. There is no such thing as impossible if you take the time to think about it. These ads should disappear. Think about what's happening to those who fall for them.

Hope, this is such a keen eye that I don't argue with you. But hey, if it's my ip than how come I never ever come across any such ad on any other site?

Last time I looked, there was no law saying that you have to use HubPages if you don't agree with what they do, or the ads they show.

You accuse Misha of "Being weak and not being able to do better".

OK, why not give us an example of what a strong person would do.
Take your Drupal  knowledge and set up your own version of Hubpages, where you can have full control over the ads that appear.

That's much more productive than sitting here whining about things over which you have no control.

(P.S. I've never seen a Scientology advert on here. All I get is the fat bloke and the weight loss ads smile ))

It looks like a game played by Freemasons. They are propagating their scientology rubbish to laymen via Hubpages.

  2. Haunty profile image72
    Hauntyposted 14 years ago

And yes, please tell me this: how come no matter what the hub is about the scientology ad appears anyway?

  3. Misha profile image62
    Mishaposted 14 years ago

Hubpages do not have any control over ads content

    1. Haunty profile image72
Hauntyposted 14 years agoin reply to this

If I can filter my impressions they can do it too. And apart from that the ad is content independent so it must be based on a direct agreement between hp and scientlologists.

This is a Drupal site and I know how a Drupal site works. They have control over everything that you see... Sorry. I mean the things that you would see if you opened your eyes.

I do not have any Scientology ad on my profile anymore, I blocked both their ads in my adsense account. I still see them elsewhere.

    1. Haunty profile image72
Hauntyposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Half the time the ads are there for you and half the time they are there for hp. When it's hps turn they WILL appear on your hubs. Also, if you noticed there is a block in the right sidebar right next to your hubs body, which displays ads. Over that block you have no control.

  8. Haunty profile image72
    Hauntyposted 14 years ago

But hey, it's not true. Just stop categorizing people on first impression and criticizing thinks you've never even thought about. Things are gonna be fine.

I think Maddie was explaining on another thread that it depends what category you post your hub under ( as to which adverts go where) ...no wait, erase that , was to do with related hubs ,on the side that dont seem to relate.

Sorry that didnt really help at all.

Perhaps you could try clicking off all adverts for a few hours and see if they disappear ?

Good Luck ,would annoy me too to be supporting something I didnt want too.

    JOKE!  JOKE!  Geez.

No, HubPages does not have a secret deal with the Scientologists.  We simply do not use our competative ad filter for things like this.  We're not going to get into the business of making business decisions based on personal feelings or beliefs.

    1. Haunty profile image72
Hauntyposted 14 years agoin reply to this

      I know it's not a secret deal.

Feelings have a place in the thinking process so I don't think you can block them from business decisions. Also, if you don't pay attention to them in business meetings you make a mistake. And there is even such a thing as business ethics.

Probably the bottom line is those who don't like it are free to leave.
      Thanks for the reply.

  26. jenblacksheep profile image68
    jenblacksheepposted 14 years ago

Maddie, I think what Haunty is trying to say in a less rude manner, is that while everyone is entitled to their beliefs and there is nothing wrong with the occasional Scientology advert on the appropriate hub (a scientology one perhaps), its basically being spammed across everyone's hubs regardless of what the hub about.

I don't understand how Google works or why it is doing this, but there must be something that you can do about it?

    1. Maddie Ruud profile image73
Maddie Ruudposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Thanks for being civil, Jen wink

Google is in charge of targeting ads.  Low-traffic hubs may have unrelated ads on them, placed by default by Google, but hubs getting any number of regular visitors should have targeted ads.

Now, if Scientology.org is buying up a bunch of keywords that aren't strictly related to religion or spirituality (which is where you'd expect such ads to appear), there's nothing we can do about it.

      1. Haunty profile image72
Hauntyposted 14 years agoin reply to this

I see. But it's not necessarily about low traffic as the below example shows:

        http://mongyibela.info/sites/default/files/images/Screenshot-18.png

Rather, I think finally it clicked, scientology is all about calorie restriction diet plans there days. smile
