Limits on Amazon and eBay ads

Is it now mandatory to have only one ad for Amazon and only one ad for eBay per hub? I understand one ad per capsule but I need clarification on whether we can choose to have more than one each without being penalized by QAP. I decreased the ads in one of my best rated hubs from 3 Amazon to one and the hubscore dropped by 7 points. Also did some subtitle and caption tweaking to make the hub better but got burned. What gives?

There are no limits like what you describe.  You should do what is right for your Hub in order to provide the best experience for readers, which on some hubs could mean having 10 products while on others 0 would be better.  There are some specific recommendations in the Style Guide Learning Center Entry.

Thanks for replying, pauldeeds, but I'm really confused now. I could have sworn that something came out several weeks ago telling us to cut our ad capsules to one, shortly after saying cut it to two. I must be mixed up. I cut all of mine in every hub. I will check out the Style Guide. Thanks for your help.

A few weeks ago we made a change to the Amazon and eBay capsules so that new capsules or existing capsules if edited, will only display a single product.  That much is true.

But you can use as many capsules in a Hub as you like, so there is (almost) no limit on the number of products you can display.  You just have to use 5 capsules if you want to show 5 products.

The reason we made this change is to encourage people to be more thoughtful about adding products to their hubs.  It's important that they be relevant and helpful to the reader.  Unfortunately, a lot of Hubbers had fallen into the habit of sticking a several capsules with several tangentially related products each into various places in their hubs.  Those sorts of placements are rarely clicked, and even more rarely do they convert into sales, and they are bad SEO.

A major problem with the change is that, especially with eBay products, you end up with items sold out.  When you could list three products, the ones still available would show and there wouldn't be just a bad notice on the page. When I post Amazon products in separate capsules, I invariably get this notice on one of them: Amazon is not providing us a price for this item. Therefore it can not be displayed."  Hubbers can't be expected to check every product on every Hub every day.

And I don't think this change will solve the problem of unrelated products.  People who post unrelated products will continue to do so.

With an old style eBay Capsule if you chose to list 3 items they'd all be based on the same search term.   If nothing matches that term it doesn't matter whether you've chosen to show 1 product or 3, nothing would be displayed.  So that argument is totally specious.

I believe the "Amazon is not providing a price for an item" most often happens with a "choose specific products" based configuration.  With search, I believe if there are additional matches for the keyword we will skip that product and try the next one.   Anyway, we've long considered allowing backup ASINs to be specified but just haven't gotten to implementing it yet.

Thanks for the reply, but I always choose specific products and now I do end up with blanks.  If I find three great, related products, I really want to show them all and not use two as a backup.

Got it, pauldeeds, I do recall all of this now. I also thought it had to do with reducing the number of links on a hub and cutting the number of ads would also address that problem we were having with Google. I added back some ads in the hub referred to above. The hubscore went back up by one immediately after. I will go back and review other hubs to see if I might put others back now that I'm clear about the rule. I only add products germane to the hub so I would hate to lose the opportunity to get a click. Thanks for your patience and help.

My pleasure.  I really wouldn't focus so much on small changes in scores that happen after an edit   With a Hubber Score of 100 you are clearly on the right track, so just do what you believe is right for your Hubs and forget about HubScore!

    UPDATE:
Fyi, when I put the ads back I had taken out, the hubscore went back up 8 points within hours. I share this because I find it very interesting. Does this mean that ad capsules increase the quality of our hubs?

I don't think so. I find that my sales hubs have lower points than hubs without them. I also saw someone else complain about their sales hub not featured. My most recent sales hub started with very minimal score compared to other hubs I recently published.
