I'm using a HP laptop, windows 7 with 8G of ram. Plugged into it is a wireless USB keyboard and mouse, large monitor, and self powered speakers. Using the latest FireFox.
Problem: For a long time I've had trouble with videos in that if I ever pass the mouse over them they will soon stop playing. Specifically, if I click the "bypass ad" button. Pass the mouse back over them and they will being playing, for a time, and then stop. The video is actually playing, just not showing video or audio updates; when I put the mouse back on the video it skips forward an appropriate time period for the time allowed to freeze. I have to leave the cursor on the video and keep it moving all the time to keep the video from freezing.
Now I'm getting the same thing with the entire screen. Refresh a FF tab and the little whirly thingie often freezes until I move the mouse, whereupon it will work for a while and freeze again. Even using the mouse to choose a spot to begin typing this message results in a cursor that freezes instead of blinking, until a key is pressed or the mouse is moved.
Task manager says the time is going to FF. If I right click a video and choose the flash player settings, bringing the window to change settings up, the video will play correctly. No need to change settings, just have that window open and showing! Let it minimize and the video again freezes.
It's not the keyboard/mouse; unplugging them and using the touchpad makes no difference.
This is getting really annoying. Any suggestions?
Hi can you try using internet explorer for the videos and let me know how it goes? So we can move from there
3 videos, around 15 minutes play time, 2 very short freezes of video - maybe 1 second each. Never had to move the mouse to get it going again. Audio kept playing. And looking back, I see I said audio stops in FF; it doesn't. Just the video freezes while the audio keeps going.
Nor did I notice any freezing while pulling up IE; it came up quickly and smoothly.
If you think it matters (shouldn't with all the ram) I typically have 7-8 tabs up in FF, but it never used to be a problem.
Sometimes some software just freezes up after a while I won't go into all the details but the solution for your problem would be to reinstall firefox. Nb I don't use firefox at all just google chrome hint hint if you might want to switch browsers. Nothing is wrong with firefox through if you wish to continue using after reinstall then that is fine.
I am leery of Chrome, along with every other product from Google. The big G collects far too much information as it is about me; using their browser just opens the door wide to even more.
And I hate IE.
But there's more, I think, than just freezing when a simple mouse movement unfreezes it. Almost as if the CPU is asking FF for something and not getting it; the mouse movement, being a higher priority, breaks it up. And it's gotten to the point that almost everything I do requires that the mouse keep moving. Refresh a tab. Open a new one. Change tabs. go to a web site. Everything requires that I make extra movements with the mouse.
I may re-install FF, although I would have to copy over all the bookmarks, etc. just to be safe. And then re-load all the plugins I use, although there aren't many of those. I just don't want to as I'm basically very lazy!
Such problems are almost always video driver problems.
I have not re-installed FF, if that's what you mean. IE did not show the problem; presumably it is indeed with FF. Or the flash player; it's actions are at least as suspect as those of FF. I mean, when just having the window to the settings open and not minimized all the video problems go away?
Interesting. I am not sure exactly what is happening in that case.
Insufficient. As a guru, answering a thread to guru's you are required to have all answers. And fix everything long distance.
*cracks whip*
Thanks for listening and giving it some thought, though, It's appreciated.
I'm not a computer guru, but I know plugins can cause problems in browsers, especially FF. If you don't want to go to the hassle of reinstalling FF you could perhaps just try uninstalling plugins one by one.
I haven't added any at all for quite some time now, although there HAVE been some updates on the SEObook one. Could be, although I wouldn't understand why that would mess with videos.
Also I should have mentioned - you don't need to copy all your bookmarks manually. Sign up to something like xmarks which saves all your bookmarks across any browser you use and then you just need to reinstall that plugin and sign in to get all your bookmarks back.
Now that's good to hear - bookmarks was one reason I haven't re-installed FF yet. Didn't want to lose them all.

HP keeps wanting to not load all the way--the spinning circle rarely stops; the page freezes up and you can't navigate, and I keep seeing, "Shockwave flash has crashed" or "Shockwave plugin has stopped working" or the dreaded "Oh, snap! Something went wrong...

My browser freezes when I open my articles tab. It lasts for a few seconds but it's super annoying. Wouldn't be an issue, but I do work in computational physics so I'm on a pretty powerful computer, so there is definitely an issue there. I have quite a few articles in the works so it could be that...
