What is the Time Limit for Q & A Answer?

   When someone posts a Question, I've noticed that sometimes a 'best answer' is never chosen.  Is there a time limit for people to post answers?  Does the Question author have to select a 'best answer?'

      Sometimes, there are no especially good answers, so the questioner might not think any qualify as "best,"  and sometimes, questions get only a single answer, so that sort of leaves out a 'selection' of best, which implies there was a choice.

      The only 'time limits' which I know of are when someone chooses a Best Answer - which could be anytime or never. If it is never than it gets too old, but I do not know what that limit is - and when that happens they tell you 'Do not answer unless you have new information'.
      The best answer does not seem to have to be chosen for I have intended to answer questions which turned out to be about three years old, I think.

         I've never seen that notice.  Does it appear maybe after someone has chosen a 'Best Answer?'

            No. you see it when you try to answer one which is too old. I believe that 'too old' means that it has not been commented on for a while.

   OK, thanks.  I don't understand the purpose of the Q/A.  I have yet to see one show up on a search engine results page.  And I don't understand why HubPages' staff thinks they are so important that they give out accolades for them.  What exactly are they supposed to accomplish and why would HP want people to spend time on them instead of writing Hubs?

      You can ask questions about important topics - especially if they are about HP - and learn, just as you are doing here.
      The answers you have been giving to other Hubbers help them to learn information also which they did not know and they appreciate. Participating in doing this, in addition to writing your Hubs, is joining in the community. Do not think of it as taking time away from writing Hubs but as taking a break from your writing. Such as in between Hubs.

      Several of my questions show up daily in Google Analytics amd Webmaster Tools. I have seen forum posts and Q/A on search pages - maybe not as many as HP hoped for. Has anyone else seen any in search?

   Let's not forget that one answer option is "make a hub about it."  In that sense, the "purpose" of the Q&A can be seen as an idea stimulus for writing hubs, much like the weekly topic inspiration we used to have (but which I do not recall seeing in some time...)

   The Q/A are not supposed to be questions about HubPages technically.  Those questions are for the forum according to staff. Lizzy is right that they are supposed to be questions that could be answered by a hub. That way they could result in traffic to site.
