    Hi all,

I have been on HubPages for a couple of weeks and only have 9 published Hubs so far. However, it is so encouraging to see that 5 of those Hubs have been selected for Editor's Choice! I just wanted to share my excitement; I am applying for a Masters in Journalism at UC Berkeley and was recently told by a former professor that my writing was mediocre. So this has been such great encouragement for me to continue writing regardless of if I get accepted or not, especially since I do not have many Hubs yet. Many thanks to the Editors.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekends!

    Best,
    crreamm

Don't allow other people's negative opinions define your ability.

Well done on your achievements. smile

Wow, that's brilliant, well done! I've written twice as many hubs as that and I've still only had four which have been picked as Editor's Choice.

I had a prof tell me my writing was nebulous.  I had to look up the word to know what he meant.  I went on to become a newspaper editor and now have two books doing well on Amazon.  If criticism is constructive, learn from it.  If it is only defeatist, turn a deaf ear.  Best of luck in your studies.

English teachers always gave me a hard time in school, too.  I turned to the classics in order to learn the craft of writing.  As a famous author once said:

"Whenever I read a book or a passage that particularly pleased me, in which a thing was said or an effect rendered with propriety, in which there was either some conspicuous force or some happy distinction in the style, I must sit down at once and set myself to ape that quality. I was unsuccessful, and I knew it; and tried again, and was again unsuccessful and always unsuccessful; but at least in these vain bouts, I got some practice in rhythm, in harmony, in construction and the co-ordination of parts. . . .

That, like it or not, is the way to learn to write; whether I have profited or not, that is the way. . . . Perhaps I hear some one cry out: But this is not the way to be original! It is not; nor is there any way but to be born so. Nor yet, if you are born original, is there anything in this training that shall clip the wings of your originality."
      --Robert Louis Stevenson

This is so encouraging, Kathleen. I can't let my abilities be undermined by mere opinions. I hope one day to be where you're at and become a successful writer too smile

Great quotes Earl! And perhaps we can all teach our former English teachers a thing or two wink

Congratulations, creamm, for your EC achievements. That is quite impressive for a newbie. You should feel very proud. I can relate to being told "you can't or you won't." Although I've always done well in English and writing throughout my schooling, I was told to take remedial English when I entered college. Really? I rebelled and refused to take it. I took Eng 101 instead and aced it, yes, I got an "A." Don't ever let anyone tell you you're not good enough based on their perception or stereotype of you. Get my drift? Welcome to Hubpages. smile

Much respect to you, janshares! You and the HubPages community has given me more encouragement than I've received in a long time and it's so refreshing to know that others who are successful now have been in my position before. Instead of taking negative perspectives as discouragement, I will use it as motivation to further my career. Thank you for your kind words, all the best. smile

Congratulations creamm.  That is an impressive feat.  I read your hub on back acne and it is well written with useful knowledge and great presentation, and if your other hubs are like that, then there will likely be even more success for you here.  I recommend reading the learning center article on proper image use.
