Is 26 too old to learn how to draw and find my own style? And running on the same vein is this question: do I have to learn how to draw before taking formal graphic design classes?
You need to practice a lot, get good feedback from accomplished artists, and listen to it. I suggest using a forum like conceptart.org
no and no. art instruction will help u learn how to find your style. don't get discouraged or be to self critical . good luck in your endeavor.
You're never too old to learn to draw. There are tons and tons of great tutorials out there to help you and the key to getting better is practice, practice, practice. I studied graphic design in college and one of the first classes they made us take was "drawing 101" so a lot of graphic design programs probably already include some type of drawing class. But you might want to practice a lot and read/watch plenty of tutorials before just to make sure you feel comfortable with your own abilities before starting a graphic design program.
I don't know if this will help you any but one of the best pieces of drawing advice I was ever given was "don't draw what you *know*, draw what you *see*". This helped me a lot on drawing teeth in portraits of people that are smiling. You *know* that teeth are kind of like individual square shapes but they don't look like that in a smile. What you actually *see* is more like a white area with a little bit of shading in between and around the teeth. Another example of this concept is if you're drawing a cup but it's being held at an angle. You *know* the top of a cup is a circle but if it's held at an angle that isn't what you see...you see an oval shape.
When I was in my drawing 101 class in college we had a few people in there that couldn't draw well at all and by the time class was over they were drawing masterpieces. So no matter where you are as far as talent goes you can learn to draw and people that already draw can always improve.
Practice is so important though. I suggest getting a sketch book and just drawing any and everything whenever you get the chance. Draw stuff you see. Draw stuff you imagine. Draw the outdoors. Draw some pieces of popcorn (that is always fun lol), draw everything. Get feedback from people (not necessarily just other artists) that you know will be honest and they might tell you "this is good but the person's hands look a little weird" or something like that. Then you can look for tutorials on how to draw hands or whatever else you're having trouble with.
I hope this helps.

Do you think it's disingenuous to trace images used in drawings and paintings? Many people posting art instruction type hubs will direct the reader to trace an image to be used in a certain art project or painting. I've always wondered if this wasn't a bit fraudulent. Shouldn't the artist draw...
