Although I love having followers, I don't always want to follow them in return. Yet I do want to respond directly to fanmail they left. Is there a way of doing that?

You can't reply to fanmail but you can send the hubber an email by going to their profile. It would be cool to have personal messages to hubbers though.

If you reply to the fanmail message using your email client, it should send an email to the address associated with the user who sent the message.
I just tested it and it works.

Oh duh. I didn't think of that. Thanks for letting me know, Matthew.

Which exposes your email address to them.
Not everyone on Hubpages is a normal person like you and me. Some are spammers, some are cheaters, some are just milking the system for their own ends.
It would be nice to be able to respond to a hubber fanmail, without giving away your personal email address.

I have learned that too.  I emailed someone on HP privately instead of commenting on their hub and when the return message came back to my email, not only was my info shown but theirs as well.  I don't have anything to hide, but for some people who would like to remain private, the email system doesn't safeguard your privacy.

I suggest setting up a separate email account just for Hubpages, with no personal information associated with it.

I already have seven separate email addresses, all of them active, including one for writing. It would work better (for me) if HP would set it up so that approving fanmail would automatically open a return mail form, in case we wanted to reply.

I think that would be a good idea, as well. I was just responding to the issue that people brought up about their personal information showing up when they respond to an email, or send and email through here.

Simply go to your 'Activity' page - 'Fan Mail' section - accept the Fan Mail which they have sent to you and you have sent them neither a 'Reply' nor your email address. You are also not obligated to follow nor to send an email.
