I am wondering, if the credits for the photos must be under each photo, or, if there is a lengthy attribution that is somewhat complex (such as the photo being public domain here in the USA, but not in other countries), if it can appear elsewhere in the Hub?

Would it be permissible instead to include a number with  the photo caption, and separate text box near the bottom of the hub, with those numbers keyed, and the credits spelled out there (much as is done in a bibliography in a print work, or credit roll in a movie/video)?

Thanks.  I hope I've explained what I mean well enough....

Although your suggestion will cover you in the event of a copyright claim, most authors prefer that their name, link etc be right next or nearby their images.

Hmm..ok, that would be fine for current photos, where the photographer is still living.  The photo I have in question is very old, and the photog not living, but the copyright of 77 years for France is still in effect, even though it is public domain here in the US, since we have a slightly different time frame for that.
Hence, there is no living person to care if their name (lost to history, in any event) is right with the photo.

For public domain you do not have to do anything  and you can list credits (if you wish) anywhere in the page. However since many public domain pictures (due to age) might be maintained or its records kept somewhere i.e a museum collection, the state of...etc, it is considered courteous to list credits as you would any other image.

Right.  I always list credits for public domain works.  They (HP) say that you do not need to attribute public domain photos, however, that flies in the face of requiring "proper attribution."
Without citing the source, how would anyone know it is public domain, and not a stolen or illegally "borrowed" photo?  That just doesn't make sense to me, so I cite all sources, regardless.

Even if I know the image is in the public domain, I do make the effort to find out the name of the person who created the artwork or took the photograph. For old photos, if I can't find the name, but know what book, newspaper, etc it came from I'll list that as the source. If I can't find anything but know for a fact it's in the public domain, I'll type "Public Domain" in the source section.

I never thought about listing the credits at the bottom of a hub, but I'm guessing you could indicate where to find the information as a type of footnote. After whatever you type in the caption box place a number in brackets. Then at the end have a section listing the number followed by the credit information.

No, the credit definitely does NOT have to be under the photo.   In the early days on HubPages, that was actually impossible to do!

That's why all my early Hubs have the photo credits in one place, sometimes at the end of the Hub, sometimes in a highlighted text capsule - because that's the way it was done then, and it's still perfectly acceptable.  Much neater IMO.

        Ah, thanks, Marisa--
Good to know.  I'd prefer that, as well.  But, at this late date, I think it's a bit much to go back and change all the credits on all my hubs. LOL
What I did with the photo in question was to put the main credit under the photo, and add a separate capsule at the end with the somewhat complicated details regarding rights other countries.

Goodness, I certainly wouldn't recommend changing all your credits!  The main thing is, so long as you have credited adequately SOMEWHERE in a Hub, it's fine.

Thank you, Marisa. You have answered my question without my having to ask it smile
