My CPM was the lowest in the last 12 months yesterday, in a week of lows. Anyone else seeing this? What is happening and Why?
Forgive my ignorance, but what does "CPM" stand for?
It's "cost per mille" meaning cost per 1000 page impressions.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cost_per_mille
Quick example, if your HP acct got a total of 8000 impressions yesterday and your earnings for yesterday were $12, then your CPM would be $12/8 = $1.50.
Oh, thank you so much for the clarification! And now for another question of ignorance ... impressions ... meaning views? I am so low tech, sorry. I appreciate you answering here though.
You can also find an explanation for impressions on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impression_(online_media)
That you so much. I appreciate the answers.
I appreciate the answer here! I am going to read now.
Makes a lot of sense now! Thank you both.
Basically CPM is the dollars earned per 1000 views.
Let's say you get 1000 views.
► with a CPM of $3.00 you earn $3.00
► with a CPM of $6.00 you earn $6.00
So your total average earnings depends on traffic and your average CPM.
It's not per views, but per impressions under the HP Ad Program. On my account, my impressions equal more like 50% of total views instead of the 40% I thought it was supposed to be.
Hmm, okay. Where does one look to find the impressions, or do we just do the math?
Go to your 'Ad Programs Earnings' page. Ad Impressions is the first column on the left: Impressions - CPM - Earnings. Impressions are much less than your daily views.
... Impressions are much less than your daily views. .... because of the 60:40 share.
Did you read my comment above? My Impressions are 50 to 55% of daily views.
Only HubPages' staff knows the answer to that.
Some people may look at the page but have ad blockers so they don't see the ads.
Then, I should have less than 40% of views as the Impressions statistic. But I don't, I have more.
First, it should convert as 60%, not 40%.
Second, impressions are counted on a calendar basis, not rolling as the view statistics are. It would be difficult to get a very accurate picture as views update at irregular times and not necessarily at the point that impression counts end for the day.
Nevertheless, if I multiply my views by .6 (estimating what I can remember they showed the last two days) it is very close to what impressions are. Within a percent or two, which is reasonable with my traffic figures. The 60% is not perfect.
My Impressions figure has never reached 60%. Is there an independent auditing firm that audits these statistics on behalf of HubPages, Inc.?
Not that I know of. But how can you be sure you are counting impressions correctly? If a page loads without ads (visitor clicks away too quickly), what then? What if ads are disabled? What about "click" type ads? Does the stats page count any visitors (yourself, maybe, or robots) that the impressions page does not?
And have you ever did the experiment shown years ago on how to calculate the 60%?

Thanks for that link from five years ago. You'd think with all the emphasis on the Learning Center that the information would be some place where people could find it!
I've never been too concerned since I think I make an adequate amount of money here for the time spent.
But, back to the OP's question, my CPM has been down the past two months and I don't like that at all! And I don't know why we're not supposed to discuss actual CPM amounts, either.
Since HP is on an active campaign to attract new writers, you'd think they would openly discuss earning potential. In times gone by, that's what attracted people to HP.
The link - I've bookmarked it, just so I can give it out to those that might be able to make use of it.
My CPM has been down since the first of the year; something I expected to see, and truthfully, I expect it to fall some more, too. It is, however, extremely variable, by a factor of 3 in just the last month and both up and down.
Speculation only, but some topics pay much better than others. So Hubber X brags about a $10 CPM and half the nubes on HP will begin writing on his topic. Whereupon there aren't enough advertisers found to fill the spots on topic X and too many for all the other topics. And HP becomes known for quick, crappy hubs on topic X, whereupon the CPM falls for that topic.
Or hubber X brags about the $10 CPM and HP people spend the next 50 hours smoothing ruffled feathers and explaining just why that is. And half the people leave anyway because they think they're being cheated. Watching what happened when the Panda first appeared that scenario seems very likely.
The ads switched off may explain it.
1000 => ads swtiched off 20% => 800 => 60% = 480 which is 48% of 1000
That would certainly make a difference, yes. I have no hubs without ads, but others will.
I found it and very interesting. Thank you!
Yesterday was good for me. However today I have had 2, yes 2 views since I woke up 12 hours ago. Really frustrating.

This month my CPM for the HP Ad Program is super low. It's been under $1.50 every day so far. And last month I had a lot of days where it was under $2. Wondering why that is and if it's just happening to me or if others are experiencing this as well.

What in the world is going on? After two months of declining page views, I hit the lowest today, losing 50% of my normal page views. Someone recommended I delete the editor's choice program which I did a few weeks ago. Now I have hit bottom. This also means that my earnings...

I had to look twice at my stats today-I usually have around 60 to70 views/day-which is reasonable for my topics-because in the last 24 hours I've had 322! I am used to seeing lots of zeros next to my hubs, but it seems like they're all popular.Maybe I'm paranoid, but this creeps me out...Any...

I was shocked this morning that despite posting a new hub last night my hub profile score had dropped from 96 down to 88. I posted in Hubber's Hangout and it turns out that I am not alone because other hubbers have their scores going down and some are reporting by a figure of at least 8 same as...

I heard when posting articles in Hubpages that when 1000 views are done, 4 or 5 dollars are made. And it may take 6 months to a year to get the first payout. But my case is unique. Even single dollar is not made in 5 months. Is it just me or is it the same for everyone else? it's very disappointing

I am very surprised to see that my page views have dropped so drastically today. I see no reason for it and am wondering if something has happened site wise or if this is just my own problem. Any thoughts?
