My husband and I are moving into our first home next month. Can't wait to see what happens...

Anything funny happen with your first home? Were there any unique old gadgets built in? Did you have some DIY project nightmares? Did you move into a haunted house?

The chance would be a fine thing. I can only dream of home ownership.

Our first home was a trailer, in 1976.  $98.16 mortgage, $55 lot payment.  No skirting under it, in a mobile home park, and forced air heat.  The electric bill that winter was over $300 per month - in 1976!  Sewer lines froze; have you every tried to thaw a 4" frozen plastic pipe?  We had to put over 100 feet of heat tape onto the water line and double that on the sewer.

Before next winter it had skirting around it.

Ugh, that sounds like a pain. That's mortgage and lot payment sounds awesome, though!

I have a good one for you. In 1992 we bought our first house from a drug dealer who was going to jail. It was a really nice house since all his money came from drugs, but it wasn't finished. The downstairs was basically just open walls with wire hanging out and the garage doors were just openings with plastic and boards covering them. We had to act fast to get the house since he was going to jail. We got a great deal at the time and didn't mind finishing the house. We moved in without doing anything except bringing in our furniture. So one night I'm sitting in the dark watching TV about 2 weeks after we bought the place. I hear this blood curdling moan next to and I jump up to see a cat sitting there watching TV with me. I about crapped myself. Apperently the cat belonged to the neighbor and he decided this was his house. He could get in anytime he wanted and was telling me off for sitting in his living room. Until that cat died years later he was at our door constantly looking for treats and a place to hangout. In fact the poor thing died in our basement. We had a cat door by that time for our own cats and when i went downstairs to check on the laundry there he lay. Yep it was sure his house.

Man, I thought this story was gonna go differently at first. I got to "blood-curdling moan" and I thought the drug dealer had left a prisoner in the basement or something. O_O

It's kinda cool y'all had a little friend. He might as well have been your cat, not your neighbors. smile

Yeah he was. I think we fed him more. We called him Ghost. I didn't mind giving him another name since the neighbor called him Puss. She was old in 1992. LOL

One more thing about the house we bought. Like I said it belonged to a drug dealer. He was on bail or something like that when we bought the place so he was there when we went through it. He had built in a corner china cupboard. The bottom board of the china cupboard would slide out. He showed it to us and told me that was where he kept his money. There wasn't anything in there after he left darn it. I have never been in the crawl space that is the attic. We have cathedral ceilings all through the house and its next to impossible to get in there. Everyone in town jokes about us have cocaine for insulation in the attic.

Too bad he didn't leave y'all any money by accident in a "secret secret stash" underneath the floorboards or something!
