Was Jesus a Liberal, Conservative, or "other"?

I read a post on Facebook, by a friend.

    I reprinted it here;
"Jesus was a radical, nonviolent revolutionary who hung around with lepers, hookers and crooks: wasn't American and never spoke English: was anti-wealth, anti-death penalty, anti-public prayer (M6:5); but was never anti-gay, never mentioned abortion or birth control. Never called the poor lazy, never justified torture, never fought for tax cuts for the wealthiest Nazarenes, never asked a leper for a copay: and was a long-haired, brown-skinned homeless community-organizing anti-slut-shaming Middle Eastern Jew."

I asked who (my friend) thought it was written by. She suggested it was probably a Liberal.

I, personally, disagree with some of the above points, but many I do not.

    Thoughts?

This bring up an important issue I've been confused about in North American politics. Why are the so called fundamentalists more conservative? It seems to me it should be the other way around.

I agree with almost everything there.  And I'm willing to believe, although I could be wrong, that whether the person who wrote that was liberal or conservative, they are very much trying to follow a Christ who believed, at the end of the day, that his people and his love, compassion, and providence for them was FAR more important than following the laws they'd been establishing and enforcing in his name for centuries. Of course, I could easily be wrong, but I pray not.

Who cares, Jesus would never get elected in America

Jesus is more like a communist, like the smuffs

Do you mean the Smurfs?  And I don't remember whether or not he'd get elected anywhere being part of the question-or my answer to it.  Maybe I just missed something.  That's been known to happen on occasion. wink

Anyone who looks at a coin and says 'render unto Caesar that which belongs to him' couldn't get elected. That's a fact. We tend to look at it as our hard earned money. smile

I wouldn't vote for a Smurf either. Blue skinned people in white hats are not to be trusted.

    APOLOGIES!

My intent was not a political question, rather a religious one.

IE, religious Liberal's, vs Conservative's perspective of Jesus.

Sound like liberal arguments to me. Whether political or religious. What causes you to disagree?

So you think Jesus was a Liberal?

But that wasn't actually the question was it?  The question was whether or not the one who painted that picture of Jesus was a liberal or a conservative.

I am personally rather conservative in some areas and quite liberal in others, and I'd have said the same things about Jesus.

If you're looking to put a political label on Jesus, he was probably closer to a libertarian.

No. I think he was the perfect balance between the two. It's easy to know what to do, but harder to know why. And, it is impossible to do the right thing for the right reasons if you don't understand the why. And doing the right thing for the wrong reasons misses the mark on some level. The gospels painted a picture of a man who understood the why. He did the right thing, for the right reasons, so fulfilled the requirements of the law without doing damage in the process.

Laws, whether they be man made or otherwise have to be enacted to serve those they are made for. We need them to protect those who might otherwise be hurt without them. No society, in and of itself, would enact laws to the detriment of their citizens. So, any law which evolves into something detrimental has outlived its purpose. Like the laws of Moses. They had evolved into a burden when they were not meant to be.

Jesus would have been the perfect liberal and the perfect conservative. Abiding by the spirit of the law to the letter. Using the law for the good of others, not against them.

There were no liberals or conservatives back in Jesus time.
Jesus may be arrested today for healing people with cannabis and a strong social service for the poor. Christian America has gone the other way on these things.
I have faith the American people will change for the better anyways.
