LOL - You could try not filling your hubs with affiliate links.

And dropping a tracker on the forums is just plain rude. big_smile

I always find it interesting when people come to the forums and post links to their overly promotional hubs... They're simply getting themselves flagged that many more times, and that much faster.

The regular forum users do it constantly -- why not let the newbies do it as well?

I assume you're talking about Mark's tracker comment.  I wasn't referring to that, merely that it links to a hub that is clearly overly promotional.

I wasn't referring to anyone's comment, I was just making an observation based on yours.

Regular forum users here promote themselves constantly. It's hard to open a thread and not see someone who's been here a few weeks or couple of months linking to their hubs telling you how to do things. I've seen someone link to the same hub twice in the last 24 hours.

I'd rather see one link to an obviously promotional hub, than 4 or 5 repeated links to non-promotional hubs whenever the person can get them in. I consider the latter to be a far more obnoxious type of self-promotion/promotion.

I don't mind people posting links to Hubs about Hubbing - I found Darkside's Hub really useful when I first joined.

HubPages own stuff is scattered about the place, and Darkside's Hub pulls it all together in one place.

I don't consider Hubs about Hubbing to be promotional, since there is no market for "how to make a million dollars Hubbing" e-books, so there is no way for anyone to make money out of a Hub about Hubbing.

Hubs about Hubbing are a community service, not a money-making venture.

We weren't referring to Darkside or Relache's hubs, but those of the OP.

You complained about regular forum users posting repeated links to non-promotional Hubs, and said you found it offensive.

I was pointing out that some non-promotional Hubs are well worth repeatedly linking to, and there are certainly cases where it is not offensive, at least as far as I am concerned.

You have the right to be offended by whatever you choose to be offended by, however, and I will not dictate to you how you exercise that right.

          1. Isabella Snow profile image86
Isabella Snowposted 16 years agoin reply to this

Actually, there was a time frame mentioned in my post, but I would probably extend that to anyone who repeatedly posts the same link over and over again.

Since I already have an opinion, as would anyone, I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to make of yours, or how it's supposed to affect mine -- but thanks for giving me permission to be offended. I'm not sure you *could* dictate otherwise, as your sentence implies, but it's good to know you wouldn't, even if you could.

I assume this is what you meant to quote. If you managed to keep the posts in order and in context, you'd know that my observation wasn't based on any links in this thread. Or, perhaps that's giving you too much credit, in thinking you'd be able to sort that out. If I thought your links were there just to get yourself some pageviews, I think we all know I'd come out and say it.

    1. Isabella Snow profile image86
Isabella Snowposted 16 years agoin reply to this

I realized you were being playful, but I thought -- and still think -- you may have misread my question.

  12. gamergirl profile image84
    gamergirlposted 16 years ago

Your question about darkside's length of time on the site?  How precisely does one misread that?  Now, if by misread you mean misinterpret based on the lack of vocal tone and facial expression to go hand in hand with your words, therefore missing 2/3rds of the meaning, then yes, perhaps I did misinterpret you.

    1. Isabella Snow profile image86
Isabella Snowposted 16 years agoin reply to this

How does one misread *anything*? Had I said "Darkside's only been here xxx months, hasn't he?" Then perhaps I may have expected a correction in the form of stating how long he'd actually been here, because it would have sounded like I believed the statement in my question to be true. So I thought you'd misread "has" as "hasnt". I guess you didnt, and I guess I'm just not meant to get the joke. Not a big deal, really.

  13. gamergirl profile image84
    gamergirlposted 16 years ago

I guess any confusion comes in on my part because your question was strange.  There was no preamble, no clear rhyme or reason for the question.

Either way, your comments in this thread really seem like you're trying to be difficult, to argue with someone for some reason.

What have any of us done to warrant this reaction from you?  What is your purpose in being the way you are right now?

    1. Isabella Snow profile image86
Isabella Snowposted 16 years agoin reply to this

Gosh, I'm not sure I have the time to answer all of that -- but I'll say this much, and I'll leave it at that, cos threads in this forum just go round and round and round and that does not interest me.

The question you refer to wasn't asked of you, so it probably doesn't much matter that you didn't understand it. It's called a tag question, and I think the point was pretty obvious, though clearly not to everyone -- but then again, it was only addressed to one specific person. If that person was following all of the relevant comments, it should have been clear. But if you really think my posts are so incomprehensible, maybe you should just ignore them. I certainly don't want to baffle anyone with my inanity.

That said, I must also say -- your behavior in this forum fluctuates between angel and plain ordinary brat. Your temper tantrums over not being ahead in a contest -- the apologies wouldn't be necessary if you could keep yourself from spazzing out. And you're just RUDE to some people who ask perfectly ok questions that you're just tired of hearing. You call people hon and darlin and you're NOT being nice when you do it. This is all very interesting when looking back on a plea for kindness and turning over a new leaf.

You've had to turn over so many leaves, you should have a tree by now.

As for the other people you mention -- Darkside and whatsherface -- he and I have a history. We don't get on, its that simple. I personally only address him when addressed first, which was the case in this thread. For whatsherface, well, the irony was just too tempting.

Really, I don't have much time for the forums anymore -- partially because I wasn't keen on your outbursts or those of 2 others, and partially cos Im just too busy -- but I have been looking in just to see how others are doing with CTR and testing. The link thing just really seems to have become an almost every-thread-occurrence. In some cases I think it's obvious that they are useful. In others, eh, I think not.

My opinion, that's all -- and whatsherface has already said I can keep it, so there.

Frankly I don't know why people care so much about posted links. I don't care that people post links about their hubs, in fact I sometimes do visit a hub only if a link has been posted on the forum. And I'm also angry that some who tends to post a lot of self promotion - which I don't care as I said - dare to criticize me when I posted a genuine question with my hub link to illustrate what I mean.

Maybe Hubpages could put some quota per day per person : this would be an objective criteria resolving psychologically biased opinions and critics.

    1. pauldeeds profile imageSTAFF
pauldeedsposted 16 years agoin reply to this

Ha.  If we had a quota I can think of a couple thousand people that would probably hit every single day.  We know the difference between spam, self promotion, and reasonable conversational linking and we delete the first two without a second thought (especially when they are reported).   Of course, people that have made considerable contributions to the community will be given a little more leeway than new users and users with a long record of questionable behavior.

      1. makemoneyonline profile image38
makemoneyonlineposted 16 years agoin reply to this

I don't mean a quota on the number of posts, I mean a quota on the number of links towards his/her own hubpages. For example if the quota is 1 link per day, someone could post 5 links per week in any number of posts: it can be a list of 5 in a post or 1 link in 5 posts. Each week the counter is resetted so that a non-regular contributor cannot accumulate credits and spam the forum. To avoid people cheating by creating new accounts especially the affiliates marketers who are specialists of spams one could ask at least 1 month old and 10 hubs .

Do you have any idea how impractical that would be to set up and/or monitor on an ongoing basis?  Seems silly to me.  Just report spam links when you see them, and nudge newbie users who don't necessarily know the ropes around here in the right direction--ie away from shameless self-promotion, towards contextual self-promotion wink

In the short time that I've been here I've found it's very confusing , and takes awhile on getting the hang of things. When to link, where to link, hubscores, what to do / what not to do, and so on. You all have such excellent information, I just wish it was all in one place. If there isn't already one, maybe there could be a thread titled, Links Just for Newbies. There all the pros could link to their info on learning how to be a great hubber.

  18. Whitney05 profile image82
    Whitney05posted 16 years ago

ZEV, I think that a sticky thread area has been asked for in the past. I don't remember if HubPages has commented on whether it was a good idea or not.

I think that it would be very beneficial for new comers, as it would have all their hub score, hubber score, referral links, and traffic information all in one spot. Darkside has tons of helpful hubs about these things plus other hubber questions, but it can be a pain searching them up.

I think that hubbers could email the HubTeam their helpul HubPges hubs and they could approve which ones meet the standards as to helpfulness and post them as a sticky thread somewhere. That would prevent all the new comers who are here less than a week and have a 'great hubpages how to' hub from submitting it.

I think the stickies should be non-commentable just informative links, tips, and advice.
