If anyone has written anything on Yahoo Contributor, I would recommend checking out the details. Since non of my articles are "paid to hire" After July 31st I will be able to bring them to Hubpages. Just thought i'd let anyone know who may have work there.

This news does not surprise me.  I wrote for them for almost two years, made practically no money whatsoever, got little cooperation from others there and when I left, they cheated me out of the measly two dollars they owed me!

HP was a breath of fresh air, and I have been soooo happy that I found it.

Good riddance to Yahoo Contributor Network and all of the snobs and elitists who looked down on my work...with more than 150,000 views, I've got the last laugh!

This may sound mean, but that site has been a thorn in my side for a long time!

Sigh...I can't keep up. I was already working on moving my Helium work to Yahoo Contributor Network, and now that's gone too. The good news is, if Hubpages keeps sticking around, I'll be bringing my 1,500-some-odd pieces from both of those sites here big_smile. I always did like the platform here the best, but just didn't have time to throw into it and still keep my profiles on three other sites going. Now all three of those are dead. Hubpages -- please don't die! tongue

If hubpages ever dies, I will cry for a long time. I have put my most efforts into Hubpages, I absolutely love the community, the platform, the great reads I find on here.

We all need to start working at more hubs and getting more traffic to keep it here. I haven't been doing that lately. If Hubpages dies, I'll cry too.

Let us hope HubPages carries on for a long long time to come. We can help that by contributing as much as we can.  One incentive for keeping HP going is the thought that if all big sites fail there remains Bubblews. Good grief !

Amen -- I haven't done much on here in a long time except update old hubs, but will be doing a LOT more new hubs over the summer. I'd so hate to see this one go too -- but, though it's been plagued by its share of spamming and what-not, I tend to think Hubpages does have a lot more potential than those other sites that went down. Like I told hubby tonight, this is the only site where I can create pages that I'd be happy to put on one of my own sites as-is -- i.e. with unique formatting, pictures, video, etc.

Hubpages has to be here for 100 years, I am banking on it! Nah, all kidding aside, HP was always the best for fundamentals - ie, keeping up with the times, keeping the business model sustainable and keeping people interested.

If HubPage dies, we should build another one together, but maintain it is better

It cost a lot of money to maintain a site of this size and host it.

On a happy note, it is one less site that Hubpages has to compete with in the searches.

I am sorry that all of you that have articles there have to go through this though. I was going to give them a try and am now happy I didn't.

"Oh my, Yahoo Contributors Network is closing down. "

My heart soars like a hawk. As far as I'm concerned, the way they treated writers over there bordered on criminal.

I don't think the Hub is going anywhere...  I believe they have found the secret of longevity in this competitive market....

If I'm reading the YCN FAQ correctly, YCN articles will still accumulate views through July 31. It's not clear to me if they will then be removed from the web as of August 1, or August 14, or "the end of August."

In any case, I'm wondering how long we must wait after YCN shuts down before we can move articles to HP without them being marked as duplicates. Anyone know?

    1. wychic profile image84
wychicposted 9 years agoin reply to this

Whenever they're de-indexed, which seems to vary. For my Helium articles, a lot of them started falling out of the searches after about two weeks -- health and other more dynamic subjects de-indexed faster than, say, history since they're crawled faster. Might be faster since Yahoo Voices was still a decent-ranking site and might be crawled more often? I intend to start checking mine against the plagiarism checker around 10-15 days post-deletion.

Thanks, wychic. I hate having to wait that long, but I guess it can't be helped.

I'd like to think as soon as Aug. 14th hits, the links i believe to the articles will leave to no where. (I'll have to double check though)

I just read about Yahoo Voices as well. I have an article that is sentimental to me on there and plan on putting it on over here. I have not put an article here as of yet with how my crazy life has been but seeing the light at the end of the tunnel is coming and then I can get back to what I love to do best write, write, write.

I got that email but cant remember if I ever wrote anything, it has been ages since I went on there. I am wondering if they are planning to open up a more extensive writers program with more scrutiny then in the past. That would be good!

    1. TIMETRAVELER2 profile image86
TIMETRAVELER2posted 9 years agoin reply to this

They couldn't possibly have more scrutiny in the future than they did in the past.  Writers there were complaining all the time about the unfair way their articles were judged.

Basically the problem with most sites which have closed down is their business model. So many good sites have bitten the dust as these sites followed staid and stale rules. The world is changing , but these sites refused to change. Look at even hubpages asking for long long articles. Who has the time to read such articles these days? Look at Bubblews.  It has thrived and gone global. I am afraid hub pages and such sites are living in a doomed world and hub pages will also bite the dust. Watch out!

    1. Suzanne Day profile image94
Suzanne Dayposted 9 years agoin reply to this

I respectfully disagree. Lots of people come and check out the longer posts, more than shorter posts. They get more Google traffic. Also, I do think Hubpage's business model is sustainable, because they get a portion of all income from all hubbers. So if the site grows, they get more money to take care of it.

Some of these other sites were imposing the silly rules and some of them were paying too much and didn't rely on income related to the posts themselves. For example, they might have paid $10 per article and only made 33c from it. Hubpages is a much more sustainable business model as it gets reasonable income to cover all hosting and other costs and I can't see them going any time soon. In fact, with less competition, there's more scope for everyone to earn.

I have YCN articles with thousands of views each that are still doing well. I'm wondering if there is any way to keep that search momentum going after transferring them to HP, rather than essentically starting from scratch as far as Google, etc, are concerned. I suspect not, but it would certainly be great. Any ideas?

Another issue: I know some of my YCN articles have been pirated. Would it be better to file DMCA requests before they disappear from the YCN site, or wait until they've been moved to HP? I'm wondering if doing it now might have some adverse effect when they appear later on HP.

File them before as the dates on HubPages are likely to be after the published dates on the other sites.

Anyone who thinks Bubblews has a stronger business model than HP is out of their mind. Bubblews is just an open field day for writers and wanna bes to put up low quality content as fast as possible. HP has much more intensive quality assurance, which is why HP ranks higher in google, and why HP will outlast Bubblews in the end.

Thanks for letting everyone know that Yahoo Contributor Network is closing. I only have 4 published articles on that site anyway. But, at least, I know so that I can save my work in time. I think Yahoo is making a big mistake by shutting down the Contributor network; however, I never found it a supportive community of writers. Editors, would decline assignments and give vague reasons for doing so.

Why?  If they were losing money - which they probably were - why would they keep it?   Like most revenue-sharing sites, YHV has been struggling to get good traffic since the first Panda in 2011.   Things have never improved much for them, so I think they've given it enough chance to recover.

If I read it right, their, Yahoo Contributor Voices, last payment is August 15. The site will be shut down on July the 31.

I am so very sad about the Yahoo Contributor Network closing down.  I started writing there and I treasure so many of my articles there.  They are sentimental to me and represent a new start in my life when I started writing again.  I don't want to lose the work.  I am overwhelmed by downloading all those articles and then figuring out what to do with them!  I don't want to lose them.  So many of my other articles link to them! I feel like so much of my "writing resume" existed there and I did like the simple nature of just quickly writing something there.... anyway.  Must accept.

I have a lot of articles there too. The fact that they are closing made me look at HubPages. But the guides are pretty intimidating!  3 pictures? Video? Really?

That's a good thing. Then I can read more of your articles. I has signed up for Y Contributor but soon after I lost interest. What benefit did you receive in contributing there?

I had several articles posted there, which were getting lots of views and earning me a little residual income.  It upsets me that YCN is shutting down.  I am debating about whether to repost the articles somewhere else.  Some of them are a little old and outdated, but continued to get views.
