I suppose it depends on your desired job and experience...
I am an English major, would I want to put my HubPages on my resume?
Would I want to simply mention that I write a blog? perhaps a short explanation of it? Actually put the web address down?
ie: Author, personal blog focusing on adult students in college
I don't want to come off as juvenile by stating that I write one, but think it could be a great use in letting potential employers see my writing style and effort. I know that is helpful while looking for freelance gigs, and common to link to your blog or other writing platform, but the old fashioned resume? Any thoughts or experience? Feedback? Thanks!
There is much more that goes into writing a blog that is useful to prospective employers. Many publications are small and the writing staff needs to know about so much more than writing. If the publishers that you are looking to attract are online based - you need to know about SEO. Because SEO is wrapped around quality content now, its not enough to keyword stuff and be found. You have to know what people are searching for in your niche - and how much competition there is for those keywords. Small publications do not have the staff to do this for you.
You have to know how to monetize your writing. How does Adsense work, how does Adwords Work. What about Affiliate partners? Most publications will have a staffer who will do this for you (and for the whole publication) but it doesnt do you any favors to not know how it works.
Email marketing - you need to know how this works, how your writing will contribute to the success of the marketing campaign - basically you want your article to be featured in the email campaign, you need the email to have a great Open Rate, and your article needs to have an Amazing CTR. That leads to more people reading your writing, more monetization opportunities, and the potential to be featured on other publications etc.
Your hub page shouldnt be just a blog. Yes, its a place where you get to choose what you write about, but its also an entry level position into the world of online publications. Even if you treat it as a hobby - its a business.
As for whether it is in your relevant work experience or extra curricular activities - it depends - a person who does it for a year could have 300+ hubs. (and kudus to them). I myself will only have 52 by my 1 year mark. But if your hubs are numerous, and of high quality - even if you do it for a year it could be put into relevant work experience.
Just my $0.02 though. hope it helps.
i dont think blogging is related to resume in any way.. shall not be included i feel..
by the way, I would like you to read my first hub that I published just a while ago!! Please comment and share if you feel!!
I's be happy to read your recent hub!
Even as a person who wants to get into writing? wouldn't you think it provide supplemental writing samples?
yeah in that case...yes it can be added...like I write other things i did in my "extra curricular activities" section in resume...I am IT professional by the way...So, yes for person who wants to go in writing, its appropriate rebecca...
As an English major, I think it is appropriate to list Hubpages so potential employers can assess your abilities.
And I agree it probably should go under extra curricular activities.
Honestly I would not mention it unless your resume is very sparse. I would only mention a blog if it is impressively popular, and not mention a content site.
First, HubPages is really not a blog. It's a collection of informational and entertainment articles that are increasing in quality with time, so your experience here will become important.
I've taught resume preparation and prepared resumes for clients for 20 years -- Based on that and almost 8 years here on HP, I list my HubPages experience directly under my Professional Experience (or Work History) with a link to my profile as a professional portfolio online.
With less than a year HP experience, I also would opt to place HubPages under Extracurricular Activities for a year.
During the second year at HP, if you feel you are successful in writing here, move HubPages up to Professional Experience, listed after the other work you currently do at that time, for a rough example:
Professional Experience
Adjunct Professor of Writing. Harvard University. 2015 - present.
Community Writer. HubPages, 2014 - present.
Lead Welder, XYZ City Welding Company. 2010 - 2014.
Cheers!
Thanks for this info Patty. I am updating my resume and have wondered whether or not to include my hubpages work. I'm still not 100% sure I will, but I like the idea of putting it under extracurricular activities.
Wonderful idea!
It takes guts to write on a public site and potential employers recognize that, I hope.
Wowza Patty! Great advice!
"First, HubPages is really not a blog. It's a collection of informational and entertainment articles that are increasing in quality with time, so your experience here will become important."
That is so true, I guess I classify it generally as a blog, so people understand lol.
Thanks so much, that info makes me feel much better.
Thanks all for the advice, great points. Again, I think it is a very situation basis. I agree with Patty, as long as I'm established, there is a place for HubPages on there.
And technically, if I ever make any money doing this it could be viable job experience Now I just need to get AdSense to like me lol
With what Patty said in mind, I've been applying lately and am sticking it under "Relative Experience".
That's a pretty good idea, too, and I like that heading title.
On my resume I haven't been specifically mentioning HubPages (even though I do include Online Content Writer as professional experience). But I do find HubPages helpful as a portfolio when trying to specifically drum up content writing jobs. Potential clients and employers generally want to see samples, so I can send them a link to my profile, or send a link to a couple of Hubs that I feel would be related to the type of writing they are looking for.
In connection with this I started another profile under my real name (ChrisJBaker) with a serious photo of me without the mask. I have gradually been unpublishing my more serious non-music related Hubs and moving them to my new profile. My hope is that will serve me better as a professional portfolio. I am also hoping it will improve my traffic on this profile (which it seems to be doing) by making this profile more niche related.
I work very casually as a freelance writer at low but pro rates ($20/hr). I not only do not list content sites but use a different name writing for them.

Do you have hubpages on your LinkedIn profile?I'm working on updating my linkedin profile, and I'm on the fence about adding hubpages. I'm not sure how professional it would appear to employers, or where to add it on the profile. Should it be put under projects or work experience?
