RESOLVED: Comments on imported Lenses are auto-approved

A very minor issue: all our comments have been transferred over (yay), but each one has the following buttons and text:

    (Approve) (Deny) Status: Shown.

It looks like we need to approve all our comments again, yet they are already "Shown" so we don't need to after all.

Can the (Approve) button be suppressed on imported comments?

I suggest that you temporarilyy configure your global comment settings to not require approval before they appear. That *should* auto-approve all of your comments. Afterwards, you can change your comment settings back, or configure them on a Hub by Hub basis.

If you end up trying this, let me know how it goes!

I've just tried this, and can't see any difference. Will it work instantly, or do I need to wait a bit?

Perhaps I needed to have set this setting before my lenses were imported, for this to have worked?

Yes, you might be right. I wasn't sure if my suggestion would do the trick and it sounds like it doesn't! smile  Let me confer with the rest of the team and see if there's something else we can do about this.

Here's an update from engineering: we're currently auto-approving comments for all imported accounts. We didn't do this at the start of the import, however, so the early transfer accounts didn't get it. Our plan is to make shown comments approved for previously imported Squidoo accounts as well, but I don't have an exact time frame as bug fixes are higher priority right now. If you want, you can leave your comments unapproved and I'll let you know when I have more information on the timing.

Yep, all 350 of my lens came over last night with all the comments approved. Thanks for the fast, responsive action.

As I spent the last eight years moderating the 5704 comments that just got imported, I too would prefer to not have to individually re-approve every single one of them.

They don't need to be approved, as they are already visible on the hub (I checked), I just think it's confusing to leave the Approve button there. Some hew hubbers might think that they do need to approve them all again...

They are going to need something because if not, they will just sit there and clog up the otherwise lovely and useful comment dashboard.

Ah yes, good point. This makes it a slightly bigger issue then.

It's a relief that they are visible on the hub without action by us. When I first saw your post, dread crept in. I have thousands of comments too, and although my transfer has not yet taken place, I realize it's not just the discussion that matters, but comments contribute to SEO with long-tail key words and draw traffic you never designed for yourself.

Thanks, Fluff, and also thanks for all the great help with utilities over the years.

Hey Tim! OMG, if we had to approve all comments. But, you do also bring up a good point -- what if we want to DELETE one of those comments that we might have missed early in the lens life? Can we? By the way, I went to your top hub, Dr. Who, and had the adobe flash plugin crash on me. Had been having that issue with hubs recently, particularly some that are really slow to load.

You can delete any comment, even if it's been approved already.

As for Adobe Flash plugin crashing, that's probably some dodgy advert. Have you updated your Adobe Flash plugin to the latest? (Chrome doesn't need it)

Tim, oh, that is good to hear that I can delete any comment. I might set aside a day to do comment moderation!! How does it show for the person who left the comment who once was a lensmaster and then wasn't, but became that default squid monster? Does it say "anonymous" or "unknown" or something else. So, it is a dodgy advertisement crashing my plugin? I am on FireFox and have been having issues of late -- FF is updated, and recently Flash. Hard to say what's going on.

I was having the same issues w/ FF.  I toasted it for Chrome and no more problems.  It's a free download.

If the problem is with viewing images in FireFox, someone who has had this problem should post it in the Technical Problems, so the staff will look into it.  If you are having the problem, our visitors are too! Please post your experience here:

Julieann, Can you go threadjack a less important thread than this one?  We need these topics to stay on-topic.

I apologize as I had no intention of hijacking any thread -- and I will try and stay away.

I don't think you hijacked the thread!  I think that some Squidoo writers are just majorly stressed right now with the transfer.  Don't take it personally.

Hi all! I have some good news. Comments on all imported Hubs should be approved now.

Please let us know if that's not the case for any of your Hubs. Thanks!

Quick follow-up question, Marina - if our lenses haven't transferred yet, should we still leave our global comment settings to auto-approve until they're imported? I.e., if we change them to require pre-approval, will that make all the comments from our lenses require approval, too, when those lenses are imported?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Marina Lazarevicposted 9 years agoin reply to this

Nope, you can ignore my initial suggestion in this thread and leave your settings the way you want them for all future comments. All newly imported accounts will have their comments imported as approved, regardless of your current settings on HubPages. smile
