In my opinion, the effects of THC within the body and on the mind are not neutral and are detrimental. No one can sway me on this issue, as I have been around it since the 70's and have clearly seen its effects. Today, the cannabis plant has more THC than ever. I am interested in finding out why so many still think taking THC is a good thing.

Oh, they will pretend they have a medical need.  But, we know most want it for other reasons... such as?

An escape from reality.  Which is why it is negative in the first place.

But of course that is common with any mind altering drug, including alcohol.  People seem to dislike living in the real world and will take any escape offered as if the world will be different when they come back.

        Yes.
        - for some it is peer pressure and the desire to fit in with that certain cultureā€¦ It can be a form of rebellion against established society. It can be a relief from the pressure of real life. The problem is there are side effects with any drug.

"Marijuana smokers have poorer memories and mental aptitude than do non-users."

"Animals given marijuana by researchers have even suffered structural damage to the brain."

"And a number of studies have shown a connection between continued marijuana use and psychosis."

Besides bashing marijuana, why not give it the holistic approach that it deserves? Many people benefit from marijuana for medical purposes including children with epilepsy and cancer patients. Marijuana is also less harmful than recreational alcohol.

      http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/won … n-alcohol/

For people to sit on their high horse and bash marijuana when 16,000 people are dying every year from over the counter pharmaceutical drugs prescribed by their doctors is deeply irrational . There have been ZERO deaths caused directly from marijuana use, but the same can not be said about cigarettes, alcohol, or pharmaceuticals.

I am sure it depends on the person.

It does have medicinal uses and for those people is beneficial.
People who use it recreational would fall on a range from mild benefit to serious harm.

I would not risk the harms just for recreational use, but the benefit/risk profile is probably not worse than, for example, extreme sports, fatty foods, or getting married.

Whats wrong with a drug-free world?
I wish it were an alcohol-free world as well!
There is a way to be healthy and happy as nature intended us to be. We must work with nature. Our bodies run disease free when vegetables, grains and legumes are consumed! Preferably organic and non gmo.
Am I entitled to my opinion?
I hope so. Thank you for allowing me to have my own opinion and the freedom of speech to express it.

    Thank you for your opinion.

I consume vegetables, grains and legumes and still get the flu and an occasional cold.  Of course, I also consume dairy, meat, fish, fruits and most everything else that evolution has equipped our body to utilize.  I also doubt that you can find non-gmo food anywhere but growing wild (huckleberries, some mushrooms, etc.) and even that is questionable.  Man has changed nearly everything we eat, by "forced evolution" if nothing else.

Do you also consume white flour and white sugar?
Cakes, cookies, pies, ice cream, donuts, white flour toast and sugar laden jam? Muffins, cupcakes,  white flour bagels, white flour sandwich bread, sherbet, frozen yogurt, candy,  ETC?
These foods cause sore throats, colds and flu and all sorts of other health issues (including high blood sugar and diabetes) with long term consumption.

Apologies for the late reply, as I am dealing with the recent death of my Godfather who died recently from lung cancer associated with smoking cigarettes. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a "drug free" world, but to insist that marijuana is the problem when there are far more serious problems in our world such as starvation and lack of proper food in our society like you have eluded to, is off base in my opinion. (AND yes, I also respect your opinion.)

There are problems that can arise from smoking anything, and marijuana is no different. Vaporizing or eating it is always recommended by Doctors.

This little girl was cured from having 100 seizures/day to none after doctors pretty much gave up on her condition: https://uk.news.yahoo.com/medical-marij … ml#uQhxS8U

My mother in law had final stage lung cancer and it made her life more bearable than any other medicine.  So my question is, why even ask yours if you are so sure of the answer and will not think of it any other way?

I can't imagine someone with lung cancer inhaling the smoke of burning marijuana.
This is why I posted this discussion: to learn something new every day.
      Thank You.

Lung cancer does not make smoking painful, nor is smoking the only way THC is delivered.  It is also taken orally, sublingually and topically depending on the disorder being treated.  It has application of proven worth for seizure disorders, glaucoma, various cancers and the nausea associated with some kinds of chemotherapy.

I guess it mostly provides mental relief from pain/nausea due to cancer.
How does it help glaucoma and seizure disorders?

If you look in scholar.google.com you will see there is clinical evidence that it help directly with these disorders, not just by providing mental relief.  It actually reduced either the underlying cause or the primary symptom.

Being open to recreational use in no way prevents a chemical from having medicinal applications.  Any more than it prevents hemp from still being a very good way to make rope that is much easier on the planet than most of the raw materials we currently use for this purpose.
