Question #1
So I am curious if humor helps a hub. I am talking about borderline sarcastic humor that informs, but with a touch of taste. For example:
"The first step toward toilet repair is to pick an exciting, vibrant color. Let your soul speak and decide on the shade of your dreams. Use that inspiration towards squirting food coloring in the back of the tank. You are now a modern day toilet tank Picasso."
Or should I keep these hubs more straight laced / to the point?
Question #2
I want traffic to my hubs. Which is a better strategy:
A.) Write fewer articles, making them focused on keyword research.
B.) Write more articles, ignoring keywords and focusing on what I find inspiring.
Thank you for any help on these questions!
James
Question #1: I think, particularly when it comes to home repair, that a sense of humor is pretty vital, but maybe the right place for it isn't in the steps to repair something. If you want to write in that style, maybe a colored box to the side, listing the steps to fix the toilet, without humor.
Question #2: I always think that writing about what you find inspiring is the way to go.
James, As far as question 1 is concerned, there is no right or wrong. Find your niche by using your own style of writing. You will attract those readers who relate to whatever style you use.
By the way, I got a kick out of your idea of using food coloring in the toilet tank. It would be a great gag for parties.
As for your 2nd question, I'm sure SEO experts will all have something different to say about this. I'm no expert, but I do read up on it. The general consensus is to focus on one subject matter. This helps build search engine recognition of your authority on that subject.
However, many of us have so much to share that few of us stick to one subject. I, for example, write about so many different subjects that I felt the need to break them down to a simple list in my profile.
If you do decide to write about various unrelated subjects, then take advantage of HubPages' Group feature. Using that, you can create groups for each subject and place each of your hubs in the appropriate group. This will keep them tied together with previous and next links at the bottom of each of your hubs, all withing a common group.
Hope I gave you some helpful ideas.
So... in regard to my first question, which hub is better (in your opinion):
Hub #1 (No non-sense, direct): http://daxamite.hubpages.com/hub/Giving-a-Dog-a-Job
Hub #2 (Humor added): http://daxamite.hubpages.com/hub/Loose- … Human-Mush
As somewhat of an expert on sarcasm I would say no, do not use it. Some people get it some do not. Some are fine with it others are not. Some do not understand it at all and will probably end up confusing and annoying them.
As your aim has to be to get people to read your Hubs then sarcasm could end up putting people off.
Use humour by all means. It never hurts to get people smiling and looking out for your next Hub.
As for question 2 I would look for a combination of the two. Remember you need people to find you Hub, so using SEO will help. But once they find it they will want find it inspiring. So not really a case of either or but a balance of the two.
Hope that helps and good look.
I have found that using humour on Hubpages can immediately cause many paranoid Hubbers to suddenly lodge a litany of complaints about so called personal attacks. What a pity!
I have a combination of both types of hubs. You don't try to combine the two types.
Basically, with information hubs that are designed to solve a problem, use keywords and don't worry about the humour as it would be a bit confusing for the reader, who is expecting an answer only.
When you want a break from seriousness, write your humour hubs without trying to solve anyone's problems. Make it clear it is meant to be humourous and not instructive right from the start. If people like it, you'll find this type of hub gets shared around a lot more socially, though it may not do much with organic search.

I have been on Hub Pages about a year and I have written about 27 Hubs and they have received close to 5000 views, which I felt was not bad and my status hovers between 82-88. Last week I had about 8 of my Hubs featured, which again seemed ok. Now magically overnight, I have all these codes now...
