I had a little free time on my hands this afternoon since it was raining cats and dogs outside and I couldn't mow the yard. I happened to be browsing the "Learning Center" and came upon a topic, How to Be a Good Hubber and Online Citizen. I don't remember, but was this particular topic pointed out to us newbies upon entering HP? I think it is an excellent read that is a great stopping post for periodic reading.

I read that when I was going through the "Beginners Start Here" section of the Learning Center. I agree, it's a great read with important reminders that should benefit everyone.

You can point people at the Learning Center but you can't make them read.

I agree Julie. After my first couple of visits to the "Learning Center" it all felt a bit overwhelming, knowing how many articles I needed to attend to rather quickly and so I simply keep coming back for some further reference every now and then. This specific section you mentioned is even more important in the light of the Squidoo content transfer and I think both "old and new" hubbers should strive for excellence and the rest will follow.

Tamara, you said a mouthful; i.e. "I think both "old and new" hubbers should strive for excellence and the rest will follow." Hopefully, us new hubbers can learn from the excellent examples being set for us by the old hubbers.

Like Tamara I've been going back and reading more as I can.  There's so much to learn and thankfully people who are willing to help.  I think it's going to take some time before I can absorb it all.

I must have missed that one. You're one of the 100 club. You're allowed to do whatever you want. You wanna send me a large sum of cash? You're level's been cleared. You can do that. You wanna send me a puppy? Cleared! Fruit? Including the fattening ones... who's gonna stop you? You're part of the 100 club. I support you and your nearly limitless power.

I did find out that participating in a Sed-me hub causes my hubber score to go down though. (I thought I would slip this is since the thread was started by Ms.Brady)

Good morning. No ouching necesarry. If it weren't for Dr. Mark, I don't know if I'd have anything at all to do here on the forum as they seem a bit heavy laden with technical chat. Apparently squid talk has replaced the bubble talk, which is fine, but for those of us who enjoy the connection with other hubbers... well let's just say there hasn't been a lot of tete-a-tete as of late. So... no. No ouching at all. Just friendly folks enjoying each others company. smile

You mean you didn't realize that arriving during one of the quietest parts of summer and then having a bunch of people on their best behavior greet you was not the normal day-to-day here?

There are humans on this site who are much more into the forums here than anything else.  There are some who just hang out and chat.  Or just complain.  Or just make joke comments.  And they move through the threads at will, participating where they wish.

For the entire first year of HubPages, there were no forums.  A definitely specific forum culture evolved once they got invented.  There is a touch of survival of the fittest.  The people who come to the forum and want someone to hold their hands or wipe their butts should not be surprised when other adults non consensually expected to be their mommies or do their work are uninterested.

The forums are really simple:  when they piss you off, get frustrating or disappointing, just get up and go do something else.  And if someone is on a rant, just don't post in their threads.  You'd be amazed how well that last one works for stopping fights...

Yep, full of trolls, full of people who love to pick on and try to terrorize anyone who is new because it might threaten their long-standing Big Name Status, full of those who make a sport out of engaging in long-standing in-jokes without explanation...and oh yeah, a few people who post genuinely useful, interesting and spot-on topic. And that last group mainly being the mods and a few other genuinely caring people.

In other words, business as usual.

Hmm I think that there are some out to just score points a bit like our old home?! ;-)

I find that the learning center (re for Brits!) is a useful resource, thought that might apply to the forums too, but apparently not so much. It seems that Hubbers are a bit sore about all the new competition for the readers. They should be grateful as it increases the links from related Hubs and hence their visitors too. Unless of course they have nothing worth reading there?

Whatever I wish we could all just get along and increase the overall value of the site. That is what it is all about after all.

    1. Sed-me profile image80

I hope you're not referring to me. Im not super competitive about much of anything. lol
Glad to have the new writers here. Wouldn't wish it any other way. As I said, just bringing back a bit of levity that a few of us enjoy with a bit of chit chat. Welcome. smile

I think we were competing over lol's awhile back. As I remember it we were both trying to laugh at Mark Ewbie's comments and lol'd at the same time and had a scuffle after that.

julieannbrady, I hope you do not feel we destroyed your forum thread. Part of being a good hubber and online citizen is just enjoying yourself.
Unlike some of the comments that followed, none of the participants are looking to score points by participating in a forum. Whatever. It is ok just to enjoy yourself. As relache points out, if you are frustrated by the whole thing just get up and do something else.

  15. profile image0
    julieannbradyposted 9 years ago

So, it can be indeed confusing when a new hubber comes on board, posts a relevant comment in a forum thread, and is told they are hijacking an important thread and cut it out. Well, I think "how to be a good hubber and online citizen" perhaps might just trump "comments." And, why is it ok then for veteran hubbers to hijack this thread?

    1. Sed-me profile image80
Sed-meposted 9 years agoin reply to this

I think we were just visiting, and would enjoy visiting with you as well. But if you would like us to desist from discussion, other than how to be a good hubber, we will do so. Sometimes threads die an early death without the intervention of well meaning visitors. Ppl chatting on a thread can bring it life, but distressing you was not the goal. I apologize for the irritation.

You know, Ms Brady, if someone enters a forum and tells you to go away they are being an idiot and you should just ignore them. These forums are open to everyone and only HP staff can go in and delete someoneĀ“s account if they are nasty to you.
If other people come in and do not like what I say, hey people, you can ignore my comments too. Live with it.
    THAT is business as usual.
