Studies have been done testing the direction people read and how the choose objects in stores, which is why aisles are set with different planograms with expensive items on one side and an oposite, lesser priced item on the other.
Well, what I'm curious is if anyone has noticed something similar in regards to Amazon and Ebay items.
Because I frequently place one beside another, I'm curious if anyone has noticed that by placing one of the right and the other on the left (with similar items) people click and purchase one over the other.
Basically, I like to give options, but would rather sale the Amazon products, and sometimes by adding an Ebay capsule, you can introduce other items of the same category that Amazon may not have available.
Do people tend to buy things that are on the left or the right more, given that both products are the same or similar.
I'm just posting to drag this thread back up to the top, because I think it's an interesting question.
I don't use eBay yet. I've sold nothing on Amazon yet even though I carefully choose relevant items to feature. I hadn't thought that could be influenced by where I put the capsule.
Any feedback anyone?
Thanks Marisa. I've sold a few things on Amazon and a few on Ebay, but I'd like to increase those sales, but figuring out which placement works best.
Plus, sometimes I feature specifica Amazon products and Ebay products (by keyword), and I'd rather sale the Amazon so that I know which products are purchased and can better choose my products in the future (price, manufacturer, style, etc.). So, it'd nice to find out if anyone has noticed a trend to people purchasing or clicking on left floating or right floating capsules, especially when you put them next to each other.
I am just beginning to get the hang of how to order and format capsules, so I can't answer your specific question about which affiliate capsule, left or right, is the more likely to be clicked. However, here are a couple of thoughts from a communications perspective which may be helpful.
First, what you learned about how people read and how they choose objects in stores should be helpful here. English-language readers read left to right and top to bottom. Any text in a top-left position is likely to get the most initial attention, given that all the text is formatted in the same way. I would guess that if both the Amazon and the eBay capsules were placed side-by-side and formatted the same way (same number of items, same background color), then the left-side items would at least get the first look.
Second, people want instant gratification. If your goal is to get someone to click on an item related to your text, then it may be very effective to place an affiliate capsule containing one or more items specific to the content of that segment of your text immediately to the right (or left) of that text.
For example, if you write a how-to about preparing lettuce greens, and you have a paragraph that discusses lettuce spinners, then create an affiliate capsule showing one or more lettuce spinners right next to that text. If the reader of your hub needs a lettuce spinner, then it could be almost irresistible to click-and-buy on the spot.
I thought I’d try this “instant gratification” idea out. You can see what I did in my hub When Your Spouse Drags Your Child into the Uncertainty and Pain of Divorce. (Now if I could just figure out how to get that AdSense stuff out of the middle of my hub!)
Thanks for a great question, Whitney. It really made me think.
Hey Whitney05
Not sure if this helps you at all or not. For those that have been publishing adsense sites for the past few years might remember there was a trick back in the da (only two years ago) that people would do on their site to increase their adsense Click Through Rate. They added little tiny pictures above each on of the ads. This would often double or triplle the Click Through Rate on Google Adsense ads. It was a nice time back then. Well, Google put a big ban on all of this activity and people had to take the images down. Not sure if you were publishing websites back then or not.
Anyway that leads me to a possible answer or I should say partial answer to your question. Yes studies have been done tracking eye movement on web pages. There is a thing called the google adsense heat map and they did extensive studies. The top left is the most heavily viewed area. Also borrowing from the tricks of old adsense publishers here on hubpages I have found if you place a small image gallery on the right side and then your affiliate links onthe left side they seem to do pretty well at converting. I don't have any hard numbers for you becuase it varies on what your advertising unit is affiliate links, eBay capsule, amazon capsule etc. However images do see to help.
By the way I your new pictures looks good...Did you get your haircut or is it just the angel of the photo? Don't have to answer if it is TMI...Makes me sounds like a freaky stalker just to ask but anyway nice picture!

Authoring Hubs is about sharing and spreading ideas. Most of what we do is word-based, and a capsule to show off related Zazzle stuff would be an eye-catching way to allow readers interested in those ideas to buy products which celebrate them, such as relevant designs, graphics, statements,...

We just released a small update to the site. Among a slew of bug fixes and small updates, there are two notable changes. The first is that you can follow the comments on a hub, and receive email notifications when new comments are made. Just click the follow button near the top of the...

I planned to use ebay capsule on most of my hubs because they pay per click. As I don't have alot of traffic on my hubs and there are only 4-5 clicks per day on ebay capsules, but my EPC is always zero. I can't understand that whether it is natural or not..Is there any change in ebay policy? Are...

I don't think I ever set up Amazon right. I have not made a single cent in the 2 months I've...been here, is this normal? I have through Adsense, so I'm wondering what I've done wrong with Amazon?

I am still getting full-width Google ads in the middle of my pages, messing up the layout. The impact of this is that it looks like the Hub is only a few paragraphs long, and readers are unlikely to scroll down far enough to find the full-width ad and the text below it.This can't be good for Adsense...

I have been playing with some different layouts as to where I have been putting the photos, amazon ads, and etc. I don't have a lot of traffic. I'm starting to learn about marketing, keywords, and SEO. Even so, I don't have a way to judge how people are perceiving the hubs as far as eye appeal. You...
