Most if not all of my writing is on sites like HP. Not all of it is here I have it spread about. With one of the main ones closing down I'm looking to decide where to place the articles now. I have accounts here and on Triond which I'm looking at moving from to. I also have a few blogs and websites which I mainly use to promote my work here and there. I'm not looking to leave hubpages as this is the best site I've come across so far however I feel that I need to find better ways to earn form what I write.

In the long run, your own website is best for earning passive income through article writing and affiliate commissions.  For certain topics though, HP's impression-based earnings program pays better than relying on Adsense clicks, but for other niches your own site running a combo of Adsense, Amazon, and other affiliates is better.

Using your own blogs and websites to promote your own work is a very outdated idea and doesn't work, unless you're getting a lot of traffic to those sites - and if you ARE getting a lot of traffic to those sites, then you'd be better off monetizing the blogs themselves, rather than sending your readers to writing sites where you have to share the income.

You may have read that the links you create on those sites count as backlinks for Google - but Google counts only one or two links from one domain to another.  So if you have a blog with a hundred links to your Hubs, Google is going to count only one or two of them and the others are wasted.

Calculus-geometry is right that in the long run, your own website, specialising in ONE topic, has the potential to pay much better than any writing site ever will.  However, having helped a few Hubbers start their own site, I know it's not the right choice for everyone.   For your own site, Adsense is definitely not enough, and even affiliate marketing will only get you so far.   You really need to build an email list and leverage that to make money in various ways.   It means putting a lot of time and effort into things other than writing - and some writers don't want to get into that.

        100% right!

Own blogs on a long run are great but as Marisa said after a time you will realize that a LOT of time you will spend on things other than writing. So if you want to get into that business be ready to work a lot on your blog.

There will be many predictable but also unpredictable issues you will need to solve. If something happens with your blog and it stops working if you don't fix it very fast it may cause positions drops on a long run.

Although WP is not complicated forget about nice hubpages modules where you just click and it is nice. It will be but for anything new you need to implement you will need to work on it or to hire someone.

So again - a lot of things to think of and work on!

I'm like you, I've tried some other sites (Blogmutt in particular) and just haven't been happy with them. I am thinking about starting up my own website/blog, but as the other posters mention, I'm not thrilled with all the other stuff that goes with it.

Have you had much luck with your site or blogs?

If you create a single subject site and produce quality content on a consistent basis, you may be surprised how much traffic you'll get.   The challenge is (a) to find a subject where you won't be overshadowed by the big retailers and corporates and (b) to learn how to earn from your traffic.   I find I can earn more per visitor on my blogs than on HubPages, but it's a learning curve.

I see from your profile that you're seeking to make a living from your writing.  If that's the case, a blog is important as a showcase of your writing - but the place to make money is not writing online, it's writing freelance.  Sign up for sites like Odesk and Elance.
