"All presenting in manifestation was created by you, and it will be destroyed by you, on transcending mind. Both mind and world rise and fall within Reality that never moves."
~ Jac O'Keeffe
Here is a very good example of what Maya really is. First off I need to clarify that 'Maya' is a concept from Indian spirituality: it says that human beings, for the most part, dwell (spend their lives) in a temporal (i.e. constructed by them in their 'minds', and having no absolute or objective existence) world of 'illusions'.
The phenomenon of the International Date Line is a very good example of how a 'Maya' may get so popular as to dictate the consciousness of the entire world.
First off, it must clarified that there is no such thing as a physical 'date line' ~ the whole thing is an elaborate imagination. Because we all have been taught this piece of imagination in schools - we now take it for granted as a reality.
No one was there when the Earth ('first') started to spin. Without that knowledge, all our efforts at counting the number of its (Earth's) rotations, becomes a futile business. The reality is: there are Sunrise, noon, afternoon, morning, Sunset, Night, Midnight etc. all happening on Earth at the same moment. This is the true reality. But we shall never know it.
The date line; about the same as lines of longitude and latitude. Or summer, fall, winter and spring. Or the concept of sea level or continents. Not sure how any of the customs of description have anything to do with living in a dream world instead of reality.
Exclude this part from your reply: "The date line; about the same as lines of longitude and latitude. "
Real = 'summer, fall, winter and spring'
Semi real = 'sea level', 'continents'
Unreal = 'The date line', 'lines of longitude and latitude'
Yet all the seasons denote the beginning of a defined period of time; a period that varies across the earth just like "sunrise" does.
Continents are simply the top of mountains, separated by that "sea level" that again varies with place and date. They are all connected at the bottom - nothing but an arbitrary location definition such as the date line.
As I said earlier, the reality is that there are Sunrise, noon, afternoon, morning, Sunset, Night, Midnight etc. all happening on Earth at the same moment.
Likewise, the reality is that there are Winter, Summer, Spring, Autumn, Rainy season, etc all happening on Earth at the same moment. You have to look globally.
Exactly! None are correct except locally; the date line is a method of eliminating that problem and making "sunrise" fit (fairly close) to a global definition. Making a definition of clock time, then, that fits closer to the part of reality that we use daily.
And as a definition only, not a physical line drawn in the sand, it is useful and as real as any other definition used to measure with. As real as a mile, for instance. A device used for communication and convenience, nothing more.
Well, the basis of the 'international dateline' is an illusion. It invokes the 'perception' in the 'mind' (of those who naively accept that concept) that something begins earlier in a certain place than the rest (ie. "Japan is facing the Sunrise while we still have to wait for 8 more hours to see the Sun here"). But it's not at all like that. Sunrise, Sunset etc ~ all these are happening on Earth at once and there is no known 'starting-point' as such.
It's a Maya.
Not, it's not a make believe reality; it's the difference between local and global. Things really DO happen at different times in different locations; the dateline merely makes them all happen at a defined time of 7:00 AM instead of a defined time of 11:00 PM. We wish to name "sunrise" as 7 AM, that's all.
That 'idea' requires a starting-point in the cosmic timeline ~ the very instant that the Earth started to move and spin. That doesn't exist. No one was there when the Earth first moved.
Not at all. Arbitrarily choosing a "starting" point to measure from does not mean it has to be the instant you mention; it can be any point since then as well. Just as defining how long a mile is doesn't mean we have to a point defined by nature to begin that measurement.
"The reality is: there are Sunrise, noon, afternoon, morning, Sunset, Night, Midnight etc. all happening on Earth at the same moment. This is the true reality."
Yes, it can be any point since then as well. Even the point that we first ever opened our eyes to the Sun.
Or that civilization grew so large, or that travel became so common, that it was desirable to define a common time. Whereupon those most technologically advanced, and most powerful, chose their own location (pretty "human" thing to do) to start it all. After all, if the earth is the center of a universe created for man's use, the people at the "center" of the earth are the most important of all!
