Immigration is still a hot topic. Those on the right are in favor of building walls to keep illegal immigrants out. Those on the left want to make everyone legal citizens, no matter how they entered the United States legal or otherwise. There seems to be a frenzy to make new laws, make changes and confuse the issue. As I see it none of the new measures including the wall will work.
I believe that there should be limits on who moves to our country and when. Allowing everyone citizenship no matter their background is not wise and certainly decreases the security of the United States. At the same time walls won't keep desperate people out of The United States.
The solution is with laws we already have. To control the problem of illegal immigration one needs to understand why people enter a country illegally..........one word answer ........jobs. So the solution is to fine employers who hire any undocumented worker high enough that it is no longer an economically sound practice to hire illegal immigrants.........no jobs no illegal immigrants......no problem.
Seems like a simple solution to a nagging problem, must be too logical for our politicians.
It would be good if Mexico had a stronger relative economy too.
I really do like your analysis of the situation. America is certainly a melting pot and it should remain that way. But BOY do I get ticked off knowing that I'm supporting a whole bunch of illegal immigrants. I feel really bad that the situation for them in their country wasn't the best, or that they couldn't make a sufficient living there. But there are as many Americans in the same boat.
I would really, really love for you to write a hub on this topic. I have the feeling it would be terrific.
Thank you for your kind comment I taught near Salinas CA and will write about my experience there soon. Read my Hub "How Much Does that head of lettuce really cost?
Illegal immigration is an affront to legal immigration, which is an essential aspect of American history and character.
Thank you.
I am a legal immigrant and that is exactly the way I feel with this issue.
It is unfair to people like myself who had to put up with the long queue in their country's US Embassies or Consulate, and who had to sell property to put up the dollars they needed for processing their papers and for the dollars they needed for plane tickets.
It is unfair for the legal immigrants' sponsoring relatives, many of whom are hourly wage workers here, who had to save and scrimp so they can get their lawyers and put up the deposit that immigration law requires that is, ostensibly, to show that the immigrant and his sponsors will not be "public charges" here.
However, I think that instead of the immigration laws being challenged or changed, those enforcing them should have more education on foreign relations, foreign countries' histories, the US' foreign relations history, and so on.
Just my two cents.
I agree with you but you don't throw the baby out with the bath water to fix a problem that has been around for over 30 years. We have to tools to fix it we just have to have the courage to fix it.
Depends on which side of the debate you're on.
In tksensei's case, I would say he probably means the laws.
Sorry that was too simple. My though is that law makers always think they have to make new laws but sometimes it's simply a case of just making old laws work. Enforce the laws we already have instead of scrapping the old laws and starting all over. This is done all of the time in the education world and it is a source of confusion rather than a solution!
Our current laws are woefully inadequate and unenforceable.
How do you deport 20 million people? How do laws written decades ago address the realities facing us today? Many hubs have been written on this subject as have many forum threads.

Should all undocumented immigrants be deported?I recently read an article where the author quoted an Arizona woman whose police officer son was killed by an undocumented Mexican immigrant with a prior criminal history who had never been deported. The woman who was the subject of the article,...

There is a discussion about penalizing businesses that hire illegal immigrants on a thread not related to that topic - so I thought it might deserve discussion.I will grab one of Wilderness' comments to start:There is currently an employee verification process. It is called E-verify. Employers...

Hoopla. Most of the people these days are trying so hard to be politically correct and refused to call a person who entered the United States illegally an "Illegal Alien" for fear of being branded as "racist". For me, if you're illegal, you are illegal. No sugar coating, no...

The media continues to omit the word ILLEGAL when they attack the Citizens of Arizona for taking action when the Federal Government will not.The Arizona law is NOT an anti immigration law... it's an anti ILLEGAL immigration law.I did not compile this list... I've had it for some time. You can...

Their behavior is an insult and a slap in the face of everyone who has come or does come to this country legally. That means they obeyed the laws of the land. Paid their money, was interviewed, stays out of trouble. This country NEEDs legal immigrants. Illegal immigrants are...
