Recommending hubs for Editor's Choice

A few weeks ago I posted something on the forums wondering where the feature for nominating a hub for Editor's Choice had gone.  It was removed because of lack of use.

Now that Editor's Choice hubs are featured much more prominently, with banners, social media promotions, HOTD consideration and other things, I think it would make sense to have this option again and I would like to ask staff to think about adding this feature back.

    Thanks for your consideration.

Hi Glimmer. I recall when the option to recommend hubs for EC initially rolled out, there were questions about how to know if the hub you're nominating is by a hubber who opted into the program. If you nominate a hub that you deem worthy, HP staff can't choose it for EC if the hubber has chosen to opt out. Even though they have tweaked the program, hubber recommendation still seems to be an issue. Unless you ask the hubber first if you can nominate their hubs, you'd never know if they were opted-in.

Hi janshares - I understand that not everyone opts in, but I would still like the option of being able to recommend hubs for Editor's Choice, especially now that they are featured so prominently and are considered for other things as well.

With the recent changes I find that an easy way to see if hubbers have opted into this program now is to go to their profile page and see if they have other hubs marked as Editor's Choice, then I am guessing they are in the program.  Honestly though, I would nominate a hub even if the hubber didn't have any other EC designations, because they may not have any others or they may have just opted into the program.

I just think it would be nice to see this feature returned.

I see what you mean if it's evident on their profile.

I'm a new here so forgive me if this is a stupid question; would people who are popular contributors to the forums and have hundreds of followers have an unfair advantage over everyone else as they are more likely to be nominated than a less popular person?  Does your face have to fit?  Would our nominations be in the spirit of a meritocracy or would we just be voting for cyber friends?

I doubt it.   It is meant to be about the quality of the writing.  One could even nominate your own hub at one time, it you thought it worthy of such an accolade.
At the end of the day, I believe it is up to staff members to make the final decision.

Good question, Popit, not dumb. I guess to be nominated by your peers, they need to know you exist. If you're active in the forums people get to know you and will tend to check out your profile and read your work. I don't think you can say active hubbers have an "unfair advantage" because participation in forums, Q&A, and commenting is all voluntary. However, having to be opted into the EC program is the only way for HP staff to consider your hubs for EC or HOTD. So it does feel a tad forced to be noticed in that way, giving those hubbers an advantage. Can't really say it's "unfair" but certainly an advantage.

Personally, I don't think that Editor's Choice should be something that is nominated, because then it becomes a popularity contest.  The editors should look at the hubs based on their stats (views, sales, comments, engagement such as votes up and answering of polls and quizzes, and yes even scores), and then review the high ranking hubs to see if they are worthy. In this way, the hubs are based on their own merit.

Unfortunately, we retired the nomination feature because most of the nominations were not EC worthy and it took considerable resources to evaluate them all.  About a year ago, we worked through our backlog of Hubs evaluating for EC candidates, and we are always evaluating new Hubs.

I appreciate the twelve Editor's Choice Awards for my hubs.  As I look over them, though, I see newer hubs that I consider to be much higher quality than some for which I received the award.  I'm glad to hear that the HP staff continues to evaluate hubs for this award.  I believe that there should be recognition for stellar hubs.  It gives us a tangible goal to aim for and examples of what the HP staff considers to be excellent writing.

Thanks for your hard work, HP staff.

Actually, my lowest traffic hubs are not EC. If HP doesn't snatch them up by this weekend, I'm going to start deleting them.

Well, still nary a new EC designation to be found... This pretty much confirms to me that the hubs in question are indeed a lost cause. So, now I can move them without having to second guess myself.

I am so loathe to knock down my hub count to under 70, but I guess there is no choice. I've gone ahead and unpublished the 2 hubs that I feel are the most hopeless. Planning on converting them to at least 5 separate webpages. Still at 70 even. And here's a heck of a note, both hubs have hubscores above my average. So I guess a profile score drop is soon to happen. Tough town... Tough town...

D@mn it! Had to republish one of them. Turns out the thing has been stolen around a dozen times; obviously can't move to my website until clean up all the DMCA's.

As for the other one, the thieves hate that one as much as Google. lol
