Hi, I'm new here and I am wondering what advice you would give based on your own experiences?

yes, read the learning centre for the rules or see how those hubs with EC Editor Choice, the format of writing and design. I learned from them

Good advice peachpurple, I think learning by example is a great strategy. I'll have to start following a few more hubbers smile

Be patient. Don't rush to publish; quality over quantity.  Take criticism well.  And edit, edit, edit.

      Hi vhayward,

First of all, welcome to HubPages! As others have mentioned, the Learning Center and the FAQ are great places to get a general overview and answers to specific questions, respectively.

My additional advice is that it can take a while to get the hang of things. Be patient and keep writing. We've got a great friendly community here, so don't hesitate to stop by the Forums if you need help. Best of luck!

Thanks, I appreciate the encouragement. Everyone has been super helpful so far and I'm loving the community. Figuring out hub scores and traffic is a little more difficult but I'm sure I'll get there eventually. Thank you for your kind words and your advice!

    Best advice;

Click the help tab top right and follow the link to the "Learning Center"..... Lots of info to get you started..

LeanMan has it right - spend 20 hours or so studying all the information in the learning center.  Followed by the TOS, FAQ's and anything else HP has published for the newbie.

Already doing that smile What I'm finding is that it just takes a lot of time and due diligence to build up your hub score and views.

On top of that I would read hubs created by established users and look at the way they structure their hubs, along with other strategies they use.

Whenever reading posts or threads offering advice, check the posted date.  You want to make sure you read info that is official from HubPages or posted after September 2014 because all the rules changed again, and you don't want old info.  That's been a big problem over this last year for new site users.

Write from the heart or write about things you either love or are an expert or have an interest in.

Relache, I've noticed that quite a bit has changed just before I joined. It can be very tedious weeding through the old and new advise, great tip! Thanks!

I find that taking time to network and follow relevant subjects, forums and 'hubbers' is just as important as writing good content. Especially if you want to reach a wider audience.

Study SEO and keyword research, what you can find on the Net and here on this site. Apply what you learn and experiment. With that, write detailed and well-written articles.

Well said and good point raised. Nowadays writing for an online audience is more complex than simply coming up with good content. Focus on SEO and keywords are critical tools in getting your writing out to more people.

Exactly, Laeeka. It's the best way, maybe the only, to reach people on the Net.

I've only just begun looking into writing with keywords and SEO in mind. Do you have any forums or articles you would recommend that explain it well?

I'm pretty new myself and found reading through the Learning Centre really helped me. That and trying to get involved in the forums too. I don't always have much wisdom to impart but I try to contribute where I can.

Be wary of following everyone who follows you - you can end up following those who write hubs which you have no interest in - which means you are hard pressed to make intelligent comments in response. I've tended to follow people who post regularly in the forum - if they say something interesting to me then I'll click on their user name and have a look at their profile. If they have some interesting / great hubs then I'll follow them and read their work which is just as good as the Learning Centre for showing you where the bar is - it's high! There are some outstanding writers here and I'm enjoying learning from them as well as the "official" bits of HubPages.

Don't write anything until you understand keywords. This is a mistake I made, and am now trying to correct.

That's really great advice Jill, thank you!

Ologsinquito, do you have any good forums or blogs to recommend about keyword usage?

You need to follow the instructions carefully. You need to find a place where there are no distractions. You need to concentrate in your article. You need to participate in all the hub pages community's activities. I am glad. You asked this question.  Thank you.
