Empowering the poor in the United States to be independent

   and self-sufficient is far better than to consistently having them handouts and creating a permanent dependent class. When society teaches people to be independent & self-sufficient, they become a contributing member of society.  Conversely, when society always gives people monetary assistance, they soon become lazy, inert, and love their sense of independence, expecting and demanding that they be supported by others instead of wanting to be a contributor to society.  This is evident by our social programs.  Welfare in many cases have done nothing but create a permanent, dependent underclass that is soaking up our tax dollars.  What is your opinion on this?

      I really think the question is this, gm.
      Can we ever go back to the freedom we had before?
      I don't see it happening.
      I just don't.
      Sad but true.

         There have to be more mandatory laws as to who should be qualified/unqualified for welfare payments.  Those who are truly disabled physically, emotionally, mentally, and/or psychologically should receive aid, it is only human to grant them such.  Welfare should also assist people who have fallen on temporary hard times, it is egregious to let those who have fallen by no fault of their own through the cracks.  However, those who are fully able can/should work.  There is absolutely NO excuse for people to not to want to work, living on the labors of others.  There are those who create welfare dynasties.

            I am with you on this. I get irritated at those who advocate for the agressively lazy.
            
            Because we insist on staying in the 'hat in hand mode' we continue to address society with bended knee. With these attitudes, we condemn ourselves and our prodigy to a life of depravation and the tragedy is that we should be smarter than this.

               ...what's to say they, (the so called "aggressively lazy,") won't change? Maybe they'll become thankful for the assistance... and become healthy and happy enough to work again??? Maybe they will take some classes and embark upon a new career. Maybe we need to develop more faith in human nature?
               
               I am really worried. Signing up for Obama care has completely changed me.

                  anybody and everybody can change. But, there is no room in public policy for those that won't, rather than just can't. You can offer a hand, but if they refuse to take it, then they fall into the abyss on their own accord.

   Question: Are the well-off willing to help the not so well-off through taxation/welfare?
   Maybe a new day has come.
   Maybe we are the dinosaurs, gm.
   Maybe instituting social democracy would not be so bad in today's day and age.
     It really all depends on the MOOD of the well-off!!!!!!
   
   I suppose it is possible for them to care about OTHERS???!!! !!!
   
   And as soon as OTHERS get ON their feet they will be contributing too!
   Right?

         I know but we have to ADAPT!!!
         There is no going back.
         I decided to sign up for Obama Care to avoid being fined. I signed up for the 2 dollar/mo catastrophic-only plan.
         Am I a sell-out?
         or a survivor?
         If I was fined the $600.00 (according to my tax person) next tax season, I would have become unglued.

   Maybe that could be MY new career: Counseling the aggressively lazy to help them regain enthusiasm to find employment and become a contributing member of society.
   My job title:
   State Counselor
   The govt. could send me a list of all the aggressively lazy. My job would be to research them and determine what would motivate them to become contributors. I could recommend therapy, self help books/groups, healthier diets, stimulating educational programs, etc.
   
   This would be a govt. job, of course.
   It would probably require a degree in Psychology...
   or not.

   I will always be needed as State Counselor of the Aggressively Lazy as there is no stopping the steam roller of soft despotism/socialism democracy at this point…
   Unless people begin to actually understand what The Constitution is guaranteeing…!
