I think it shows incredible arrogance when taxing and rule-making authorities treat e-gigarettes the same as tobacco products.
There is no tobacco to tax. There are no harmful 2nd-hand dangers to non-smokers.
How the hell can they justify this, and why the hell are they getting away with it?
GA
I agree, it is more than just a little arrogant...... To tax the activity rather than the product goes too far.
Don't know, but does the nicotine that is an active ingredient in e-cigarettes derived from tobacco in any form?
People smoke them because there are indeed tobacco products in them, oils from the tobacco plant. Why did you think people used them?
Also while better than smoking tobacco, vaping is probably somewhat bad for your health. The research on that subject is still being developed but the water vapor alone seems to not be good for your lungs.
Bottom line, tobacco is taxed, even in oil form.
Yes, there is that bottom line - nicotine is derived from tobacco. But calling it a product of tobacco. although technically correct, seems a very flimsy hook to hang you tobacco tax hat on.
What about the bans? Vaping isn't smoking. No harm/No foul to folks close by. No smoke. No carcinogens. No burning odor.
GA
It's easy enough to justify; they are taxing a small group of (nearly) powerless people to fund projects the majority wants. Money from people that can't effectively protest, to be handed to others so that they don't have to pay. A great deal for the non-payers, and isn't that justification enough?
It's much like hitting the traveler for enormous hotel room or rental car taxes - a great deal for the city dwellers that will spend it, not so great for those paying it.
That makes me wonder if the non-nicotine oils for e-cigarette have a tobacco tax also,
