There may be real good reasons we don't push ourselves to this scientifically determined "max" effort. There may be a very good reason to always keep a little something in reserve - like survival, for instance. Just because we can PUSH harder for short term effect is not a reason to advocate this for general benefit of most people in exercise. Does this carry any real benefit in terms of health gain, longevity, emotional / mental wellness, life satisfaction, etc? Or is this potentially another way for people to exhaust themselves. This certainly sounds like a Type A wet-dream of an exercise regimen. As a research paper writer I'd say that talking positively to yourself is a great idea - and the dynamics of regularity make total sense - but to what end? Lets apply this to stop smoking, to anger management, to turn couch potatoes into walkers & joggers - all good. But let's think twice to push ourselves to every new extreme - that's not a sustainable path.

Uh…. you have hit on a vital truth of the matter. Self motivation is very important. It is the most crucial ingredient for success because

    what?

do you think it is motivating when dictated to by SOME ONE ELSE?
    Like a BOSS?
    Like a PRESIDENT?
    Like a PRIEST
    Like A PARENT?
    Like YOUR TAX MAN?
    LIKE OBAMA CARE MANDATES
    ETC….

Self-motivation is HIGHLY IMPORTANT.  However, few people possess the instinct for self-motivation.  They prefer to be led by others.   Self-motivated people are self-assured & viewed as threatening by many who exist to be led.

Self-motivation is FREEDOM. Self motivation is self-guided will driven by desire toward one's own goals, dreams and ambitions and actions in general.

However, one must always consider the boundaries to free will. We do not have willy-nilly free will. and it comes down to the main boundary which has to with love:
Love your neighbors as yourself and also "love" "God", because "God" equals love, logic and Reality.
and The Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Now, if you do not know how YOU would like to be treated, heaven help you!

We were born with self-motivation but it gets robbed by society, for one.

    "Sossity, You're A Woman"

    Hello you straight-laced lady,
dressed in white but your shoes aren't clean.
    Painted them up with polish
in the hope we can't see where you've been.
The smiling face that you've worn
to greet me rising at morning --
sent me out to work for my score.
Please me and say what it's for.
    Give me the straight-laced promise
    and not the pathetic lie.

Tie me down with your ribbons
and sulk when I ask you why.
    Your Sunday paper voice cries
    demanding truths I deny.
    The bitter-sweet kiss you pretended
    is offered, our affair mended.
    Sossity: You're a woman.
    Society: You're a woman.

All of the tears you're wasting
are for yourself and not for me.
It's sad to know you're aging
Sadder still to admit I'm free.
Your immature physical toy has grown,
too young to enjoy at last your straight-laced agreement:
woman, you were too old for me.
    Sossity: You're a woman.
    Society: You're a woman.

Robbed by parents first. Self-motivated kids are 'trouble'. They follow what they want, they know what they want. But it is 'better' when you are good, when you listen, follow orders from others. Parents should learn to listen and guide instead of boss and command.

By the school systems which foster very little self-motivation, ambition and the freedom to do so, for another.

    Otherwise, why this song?

    School's Out
    All the girls and boys
    Makin' all that noise
    'Cause they found new toys
Well we can't salute ya can't find a flag
If that don't suit ya that's a drag
    School's out for summer
    School's out forever
    School's been blown to pieces

No more pencils no more books
No more teacher's dirty looks yeah
    Well we got no class
    And we got no principals
    And we got no innocence
We can't even think of a word that rhymes
    School's out for summer
    School's out forever
My school's been blown to pieces

No more pencils no more books
    No more teacher's dirty looks
    Out for summer
    Out till fall
We might not come back at all
    School's out forever
    School's out for summer
    School's out with fever
    School's out completely
