   Hi,
   In your opinion, Which movie is The Greatest Movie Ever?
   It should be one that you have personally seen as i think the personal experience is also very important in the Art sense. Would be happy to see some Action/Comedy titles in there too. Just trying to see if there is a general consensus regarding which film is the best of the best, the most brilliant, The Greatest Movie Ever!

      What a difficult question to answer - there are so many great films! But if I had to narrow it down to just one film being the best all-around developed movie of all time, it would have to be GANDHI.
      After GANDHI would be these five:
      The Godfather (the original, #1 in the series)
      Ben-Hur
      Gone With The Wind
      LOTR (the whole trilogy)
      Excalibur

      Considering an answer would be purely subjective, based upon the question, it is impossible for me to answer, because no single film qualifies for me. I can't even give you a favorite because it would depend upon my mood. You cant use the Oscars as a deciding criteria because of how films are chosen and who votes. While I cant give you a specific film I can give you criteria for you to use from Director John Huston
      
      It is not an exact quote, but it is as close as I can make it -
      
      "A great film has several memorable scenes in it, and no bad ones."
      
      Start there to make a search, but not even the AFI will name a single film, but they will give you a list of the 100 best dramas, westerns, comedies, etc...

   In my opinion,out of all of the movies I have watched, I would have to say, the Greatest Movie Ever in the Christmas genre is, "It's a Wonderful Life."
   In the Classic Family category, "Heidi," Classic Old Time Movie, if that is even a genre would be, "Gone With the Wind"  and All time Greatest Thriller, "Gone Girl." The Greatest Movie Ever as far as comedy goes, "The Hangover." The Greatest Movie Ever in the Western films, "Shane." Did I leave any categories out?

   All of these foregoing movies would be in my top ten.  In my top ten I include franchises as a single film. So Godfather one and two make the top 5 as a single film (3 was vile so it is not on the list). All three  Lord of the Rings movies count in my top ten as one marvelous compendium.
   
   I would like to add the Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption to the list of greats (Steven King is brilliant). I can and do watch them over and over again.

    Thanks for all the nominees guys, so many good titles out there, all for us to discover. But i think the most mentioned film is Godfather 1 and the most mentioned trilogy is LOTR. Anyway, to more directly answer the topic at hand, the Best All-Around Film may be The Godfather, but my personal #1 Greatest Film is O Brother, Where Art Thou? It's a toss-up between O Brother and The Princess Bride for Most Rewatchable Film, and Grave of the Fireflies is easily the Greatest Animated Film; it's a toss-up between Fireflies and Crouching Tiger for Best Film Not in the English Language.

    Wow--like everyone else, I cannot pick a single favorite.  I don't even know if anyone else would consider the movies that struck a chord with me to be "great."  As another has commented, that is totally subjective.  A few of my favorites, though, (depending on my mood) would be:
    
    Grumpy Old Men
    On Golden Pond
    Driving Miss Daisy
    Somewhere in Time
    Dances With Wolves
    Mrs. Doubtfire
    Dead Poets' Society
    Enemy Mine

    I would have to say Star Wars. Because everyone knows Star Wars.
    
    But if you want to talk classic. I would have to say the Wizard of Oz or The sound of music.
    
    Wizard of Oz is probably one of the oldest movies that has been shown on television for decades, and it has been sold in every home video format that has been invented.
    
    Makes me wonder how many people remember the lazor disc player.
