The Niger-Delta militancy and vandalism which has ravaged the oil region of Nigeria for 2 years and has reduced Nigeria's oil production by one-third, as well as scared away foreign investors and tourists is finally being nipped at the bud. The president declared unconditional Amnesty for all militants who surrender their weapons and check in a rehabilitation centre which has been stationed all across the region. Today is Day 6 of the Amnesty and great success is being recorded. However, there'll always be some resistance. But the militant leaders are falling in line. May this finally end!
Note: Niger-Delta is the term used to refer the South-South oil-producing region of Nigeria, which includes Bayelsa, Rivers, and Delta states. The states most affected by this militancy against the foreign oil companies such as Shell BP and Chevron.

I have to say that I agree with your line 'may this end'.

I have some Nigerian friends that now live in the UK. They can't return because they fell foul of someone ... though they said that it was foolish in light of the associated dangers.

Anyway they lead a very successful life now (very hard working they are) and deservedly so.

I know they wish to go home, at least to visit family.

The unrest has been isolated and blown out of proportion. Especially by the foreign media. But then again, who wants to come and see things for themselves if it isn't so. So yes, may it end.

To be honest - I know litle other than what Maria told me about. I don't 'buy' into all that I read in the media (or hear).

Hope your country's amnesty program really works. Maybe the program can be an example for a honest-to-goodness amnesty here in my country.

Glad to hear this.  A friend of my daughter recently went to study abroad just outside of Nigeria.

What do you mean, outside of Nigeria? Nigeria is a country, you know, Jane.
