Is it really that hard to verify if someone really is female?

   Ok so there was a report on the lunch time news today that just boggled my mind. The story was about a woman runner who has won gold (I think) but now is being investigated to make sure she is a woman. They stated that this process will take several weeks to verify. Am I the only one that thinks this sounds totally nuts?

   I guess that they will do a genetic test, and then do a genetic re-test, and then come out and tell us that she is indeed completely female.... making us all feel slightly guilty for causing her a little distress.
   
   If you cut the hair off of serena and venus williams, and then banned them from using make-up, epilators and tweezers..... then they would look pretty manly too.

      HA HA HA!!!!!!! I got two wrong...It would only take a couple seconds to check those boys out! I am guessing they are talking about a surgery thingy..but then, if he/she had surgery, he/she still won the race, as a girl NOW so what difference does the orignal sex make?

         I worked in a jewellers for a while. We had several regular customers who were transvestites. They were very smart and beautifully made up, but there were a couple of big tell-tale signs. Men's calf muscles seem higher up, and the muscles are either more defined or just stringy looking, their hands are typically bigger and squarer, and they always chose the rings with the largest stones!

   this is alot of unneeded emotional distress on this poor woman. just becuase she beat them by a couple of seconds. shes really fast and the othere woman become jealouse becuase they could not keep up.

      We dont know if she is a woman or not yet.... I will retain my guilt and sympathy until we know for sure. If she isn't (and they have been caught before on several occassions!) then he would surely deserve what he gets?
      
      Better to find out now before as early as possible the next Olympics, then to find out after 'he' has stolen a gold medal from a genuine female.
      
      I will be sympathetic if it transpires that she really is she.
      
      What is it with South African athletics? First they gave us 'Blade Runner' and then they give us 'ManGirl Runner', Im looking forward to them giving us 'The Three Legged Runner'.

            There was a famous Austrian skier in the female ski team of Austria in the 1970ies. She won quite regularily. She always felt something "different" according to her but didn't know why (she was a farmer's girl from a very backward rural area). Then she got disqualified as being no "real" women. After a while she made a sex-changing operation. You can imagine this caused quite some discussions back in the 1970is.

            Even if she is intersex, in most cases they will be more one than the other. The genes and mental psychology will say one thing even though the organs say another.

         What is a "genuine female,"  really?  Gender/sex are not as cut-and-dry as most people might like to believe, not just psychologically, but in terms of genitalia and chromosomes as well.
         
         The whole thing makes me angry.

    well the type and text of hubs definitely helps see writer's gender. Women are soft hearted in writing (some excpetions; however those who are hard choose a feminine profile). Only few men come here to pretend like a woman however they lack the style of a female. Easily identifiable.

    Equipment can be changed surgically. Hormones can be changed too. A certain percentage of people are born both genders. So it's not as clear as you might expect.

          Ask her where she wants to eat lunch. If she says, "I don't care, where do you want to eat?" she's female. If she gives you an immediate answer that includes buffalo chicken wings, she's a guy.

    Very unlikely that she's a man who has had surgery, etc.
    
    More possible that she's intersex, which does take a while to work out.
    
    Men are XY. Women are XX. There are a few people who are XXY, for example (among other similar conditions) who may look like women, but aren't quite.

       this is so true. but if it's just about determining the sex, then it is not really difficult to have a check on the sex chromosomes. so why take weeks? perhaps the "committee" is not only interested about knowing the sex, but checking other possible cheating modes as well, i.e., taking drugs or hormones that significantly boost performance and put the other players at complete disadvantage. this latter issue is still complicated though.

    DNA testing would determine if it's female. Sometimes it is hard to tell. Outside one may look one gender, but internally be another. It's sometimes that simple. Sometimes, it's harder than that. Like Maddie said, it's chromosomes and genetalia.

    I'm wondering what the regulators will do if they do find she is a she but with a lot of he.  Can they exclude her?  Is the definition of men and women made up in percentages and who makes that decision?
    
    I've seen her picture.  Her muscles are very defined but her face is rounded not angular

    It isn't as simple as just checking down below, or even the genes.  The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) quaoted the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) as saying a whole group of doctors will be required to check including (and I quote):
    
    "endocrinologist, a gynaecologist, an internal medicine expert, an expert on gender and a psychologist"
    
    As such it appears that there is likely to be soem confusion.  Also I once watched a program on TV.  It said that a much larger proportion of people than you would think are mixed sex in some way, and many of the people who are won't even realise.  For some reason I think the average quoted number for the global average was above 10%, but as with many things it depends on race/customs etc (something to do with being linked to environment etc).

    she look-a like-a man to me, but in my profession we see so many girl-guys and guy-dolls. I saw one today! Genetics is the only way to go...unless you have to frisk them for contraband and there's no roadside genetics test, then you are screwed and have to get both genders to do a body search. Sucks...especially if there's dick in wrong places...
