   I wrote a hub about my life with my miniature schnauzers. I have two schnauzers and a border collie. They are all extremely smart. My oldest schnauzer, Ceasar, can spell and tries to talk to you. If you make eye contact with him and speak to him, he begins making groaning sounds and barking. It's like having a conversation except I have no idea what he is saying. LOL. He can also spell some words like p-o-t-t-y and c-o-o-k-i-e. If you say these words he goes crazy, so we started spelling them and now when we spell them he has the same reaction.

      You do have intelligent dogs.  Border Collie, my all time favorite for intelligence.  Next on my list is the Australian Shepherd.  These are the easiest to train.  Don't forget the Bernese Mountain Dog.  Big, beautiful, loyal and very intelligent.

   My two rotties were totally awesome.  Both could open doors (regardless of knob type), unlock and open casement windows, ring the door bell to come in, sit on a swing and swing with my children, push the garage door opener button to get out of the garage and a whole swack of other things.  One was trained to be a water and snow rescue dog.  They were the best!!!

   I have 2 Boston Terriers and a Boxer.  The Bostons terrify me with how smart they are, and how stupid they make our Boxer look.
   
   Samson, our 4-yr-old Boston, is a mind-reader, a manipulator, O.C.D., and can climb book-shelves as well as baby gates. There is no keeping this dog down, I tell ya.  Sadie is a Jedi-princess with the way she knows how to get what she wants and makes us think it was OUR idea!
   
   We can't even SPELL certain words anymore because they have caught on (like O-U-T, B-E-D, F-O-O-D, P-U-P-P-I-E-S, C-R-A-T-E, and some others that escape me at the moment.) It's scary.
   
   Now our Boxer, Bentley... he runs full-speed into walls and chases after light reflections on the ceiling.  We're not sure about him, but we think he may require some Special Ed schooling...

   My pug/chihuahua mix also has learned how to recognize spelling, or at least that w-a-l-k and l-e-a-s-h mean the same as walk and leash. Whenever she sees anyone get the leash down, she tries to talk, too. "Wwwwah? Hmm? Hmmm?" We're pretty sure she's asking if she's getting her walk.
   
   I also have a blue heeler who, when my children were babies, would always stand guard by the crib when they were napping. When they'd wake up, she'd run out and alert us even before the kids would start crying. She also wouldn't let anyone but my husband, me, and a select few other trusted people near the kids without a thorough sniffing and a stern warning not to hurt them. Finally, when the kids learned to walk, she'd try to round them up if she suspected they could get into danger. Not a bad babysitter at all for a dog!

    The smartest dog I know is the dog that avoids me--knowing, of course, that I'm a cat person and don't care much for dogs one way or the other.
    
    Except for our son's Great Dane / Lab cross, Cooper, who bit my wife rather badly a few years ago.  About that one, I do have an opinion!

    I've had many dogs, cats and other animals my whole life, but my boy Hank (Lab) has got to be the smartest, grateful and most loyal dog I have ever had...and he was my 1st rescue, he was taking his last walk at 1.5 years old (foreclosure doggie)when I walked in and adopted him.
