Whitney05 always seems to include great photos in her hubs, and I'm wondering if she has some tips on finding photos, especially dog photos that are free to use. Anyone else who has tips for such free photos, would be appreciated for their advice.
Thanks much.
A good place is sxc.hu which has thousands of free photos which you can search by keyword. However, make sure that you read the terms and conditions accompanying each photo, which are set by the individual artists. Some place no conditions, others require written notification of where you are placing their work, or even a link back. But all in all, this is a great site and hundreds of new photos are being added all the time. (By the way, the site is in English even though the .hu domain is Hungarian. Never really figured that one out.)
This is where I get most of my photos, or I use my own.
If you do an advanced search on Flickr you can find the photos that have a "creative commons" licence. Just make sure you attribute them (put "photo by X" somewhere on the page).
There is a Hub which lists half a dozen free photo sites - try doing a search in the HubPages search box.
Jenny
I used to use bigfoto.com and a couple of other free sites, but they were very limited and it took me ages to find a relevant photo. Now I use Flickr. If you use the following link, you'll find yourself on the right page to search photos with the right licence:
http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/by-nd-2.0
Alternatively you can do as Jenny says from the "Advanced Search" box. I generally tick the "for commercial use" box too, just to avoid any possibility of doing the wrong thing - even then I get a good choice of photos. And I always credit the photographer, but usually at the end of the Hub rather than under the photo.
Was wondering the same thing. I used to do searches for public domain photos but that ended up taking forever to find anything half-way decent. These suggestions look great! One less thing to spend a lot of time doing.
All your advice is helpful to me, too. Although I was saddled with photography as part of my public information job in the Army back in the '50's, I am not all that knowledgeable about the subject. I often wonder how many hubbers actually pay for some of the great photographs I see on various hubs.
One thing I am trying to do now is take as many of my own photos as possible for each hub. It is sort of fun and while my photos may not be the best ones on earth, they are mine and I feel it make my hubs unique .
That's a good point! Just the other day, I discovered that Marye Audet and I had used the exact same "onion" photo. It made our Hubs look the same although the content was completely different. If I'd used one of my own, that wouldn't have happened
I am sure it is still good . I am using my cell phone to take pictures when I am on the go of things that I might use later. For example I was just thinking the other day at the grocery store I could take a picture of apples if I were writing a hub about that.
Thanks to everyone for your helpful advice on finding free photos. You guys are great.
Grousepup
I do as many of my own as possible....and I use morguefile.com alot for free photos. Because of my other writing assignments I am thinking about using in iStock.com but I am not ready to pay money.
grousepup, most of my pictures are from the CC section of flickr. Some are from the regular Flickr section, but you should ask permission before using the pictures. You can click on the user's profile and send themn email asking for permission. Otherwise, I like to use my own pictures.
I have emailed webmasters to get permission for use of their pictures. The pictures that I use of Wallace the Pit Bull catching frisbees, are directly from the website that Wallace's owner has created and keeps updated. He's a rather nice man, and was kind to let me use his photos. Usually, people don't have a problem with it.
I've been looking for information just like this...where to find free photos. The resources you all so willingly share are now firmly bookmarked in their own folder on my PC.
This is Hubbers and HubPages at their best!
This hub have a good list of free photo sites.

I am new here.. im really happy to find this sxc.hu link from the above posts.. it helped me find some royalty free images.. my only concern is that some have a watermark on them is it acceptable by hubpages? kindly help a newbie in need? thanks in advance
The watermarks appear on the pictures that you have to pay for from sxc.hu. There is no watermark on the free ones.
What UW means is that the photographers want you to pay for the watermarked versions, that's why they have defaced them with the watermark (when you buy the photo, you get an unwatermarked version).
The free ones don't have a watermark and those are the ones you can use on HubPages.
Thank you so much your help, it solved my issue with photos..

Hi folksAre there any websites where I can get free photos or pics. I will naturally give credit to the owner of the photo. I tried MorgueFile, its too cumbersome, or am not navigating the site correctly. Thanks
