So December this christmas I will be meeting my mother-in-law for the first time. My husband has told me that she is like me; tomboy who loves fairies and mythical craetures as well as of course other things such as personaility.

I have never met his mom before...have his step mom and dad but that's it when it comes to his family. And I am nervous as all (insert curse word that ends in double ll here).

    Any advice?

As long as the two of you are into mythical creatures......don't really think you need to worry.--The first time I met mine she flip me off, if he loves you you're fine!

She just referred to everything as his.  In their family the man is King!  My hubby isn't like his brothers, or I would not have married him.  She has gotten so much better.  I do love her!

If you're just meeting now I'm assuming you don't live near her and will just be visiting.  I'd say to just be nice and keep in the mind that "whoever" (you or she) will be going home soon.  smile

My late mother-in-law was very, very, nice. We had a really great relationship.  I can't resist the following, though  smile  :

lol  My girlfriend married young and married an only child.  She inherited an overbearing mother-in-law AND grandmother-in-law.  They lived nearby and made my friend's life absolutely miserable.  lol   Once, the mother-in-law rearranged all my girlfriend's cabinets while she was out.  mad  The grandmother, "sharp as a tack", would just say any rude thing she felt like saying because she thought she could get away it because she was old.  lol  I heard about the saga of the mother-in-law and "Nonnie" for a good part of our adult life, then my girlfriend and I lost touch for quite a while.  "Nonnie" was in her 70's and 80's when I was hearing about her.  When I eventually talked to my friend again she joked that Nonnie was still alive and had turned out to be "quite the long live-er".  lol  With her tired and sarcastic tone she said, "Nonnie isn't going to die.  Nonnie is not human."  lol  At this point if Nonnie is still alive she must be about 120 years old.   smile    Be glad your mother-in-law won't be bringing along a "Nonnie".   smile

Well, the intell going in is quite positive. Sounds like your hubby has replicated his mom to a large extent in his choice of a wife! That's gotta be very flattering to his mom. Um, unless she chooses to see it as a threat.

Hard to know how these MIL things will go. Take your cue from Hubby. See how he handles her. Oh yes, and JUST BE YOURSELF!

Final thought. Since you know you and she share a love of mythical creatures and faeries, why not break the ice with a gift? Give her something that you like (not that is yours, a duplicate) and explain why you love it. Or maybe a book about faeries and unicorns. I don't know -- that seems to be a good bridge to start with tho.

    Good luck! MM

And thanks MM that is a good idea. I have sent her gifts of fairies and other things for her bday and holidays smile

And yep Lisa MIL lives in Ohio...far away from Cali

And Lisa I am so sorry your friend had to go through that...funny but so sad too lol
