My twelve-year-old Rat Terrier died last week.  She was a very good and loving dog.  All she needed was a little food and water, and a Lot of love.
She was very good with kids. Even in her older age, she would get irritated, but never acted like she would hurt them.
    She never liked cats, though.
She spent about half her life sleeping with my oldest son.  She was always his dog, until he got busier with life, and then she was mine.  But, she still slept with him whenever possible.
She was white with black spots.  bjp

My sympathies Betty Jo.  We had a Jack Russell Terrier (B&W) that died almost exactly 1 year ago.  It is very hard to lose a beloved pet.  If you haven't already, you can commemorate her in a hub.  I did with our Maggie.

Betty Jo, I am sorry for your loss, I know how hard it is to lose a pet that is close to you, especially the fun loving dog members of the family.

      This makes no sense...

I personally, wouldn't recommend getting another dog identical to your pup, as it can be harder to cope. If you need another pet to help with the grief, I would recommend something different.

After 6 months when I realized that nothing would stop the near nightly tears that I would fall asleep to over the loss of my fawn male APBT, I decided that I needed to bring home another. I had to go different or everything would reming me of him and it would defeat the purpose; I found a blue female. I needed the pup to be of the same breed or I felt that it wouldn't work for me.

If you need it, I have a hub about dealing with the loss of a pet.

I wish you and yours well when coping with this loss.

My condolences.  It's always hard when you lose a loved one.  But hang in there.  It gets better!

    Betty Jo--
My condolences for the loss of your beloved pet.  I know it can hurt the same as losing a human loved one.

I lost my Siamese, BOY CHANG, 15 years ago.  He was 15 years old, in good health, "told" me it was time to go to bed and then he passed sometime during the night.  It was a terrible shock to find him the next morning, he looked like he was sleeping.  For several years I'd think I'd see him out of the corner of my eye, walking by or jumping up on a window ledge.

Then 5 years ago I felt ready to share my life with another pet and got my sweetie-pie, BABYKITTY.

Greive for your friend and do what your heart tells you about wheither or not to replace him and when.

    Take care!

    Hi Betty Jo,

I understand how you feel too.  I believe that we treat our pets (dog or cat) as part of our family virtually like a child.
And most times they give us back more that the kids do.  Most times they dont argue just love us unconditionally,  no matter what we do to them.

I have lost several pets over the years, and no it does not get any easier.

I would not get another pet just yet.  Give it a bit of time.

When we lost our siamese cat, (had him for 16 years) The vet found that he had an anarism. We left him there
The next morning we went back to the vets, took some beautiful photos of him in there then left him, for a while.  We went back the next day and picked him up.  He was all wrapped up in a beautiful cover.  We walked around the house with him doing things we normally did with him.  And cried and cried.(crying now while writing this)  And eventually we buried him where he used to love sitting in the sun around our fish pond.

It gets easier  but it takes time.  So hang in there  and keep writing, even happy thing s about him.  That way he is still with you in a way.  Take care.

I had been so busy on that other site, Hi Eileen, that I had not realized how long it has been since I had been on here.

My dog that died was twelve.  I did have her daughter, eleven.  I went out to feed my little family of Chihuahua/Rat Terriers one day last week, and the eleven-year-old had died.  She looked like she just laid down and went to sleep, and that was it.

Even though I do have others.  Same family from the twelve year old, they are so different with their own little personalities.  It doesn't take long to know the differences.

I have one I named Baby, she is so much like a little baby.  A very small dog.  She looks almost like the twelve year old one did.  And for most of her life, she was called Baby, but her name was Cookie.

So, in a way, I still have a large part of Cookie still with me.  My daughter told me today she wants Baby.  I will be glad to see her go to a good home.  Now, if my daughter would grow up and move out!  lol..I'm in no hurry for that, well, maybe a little.

Baby has two sisters, Annabella and Domino.  A brother, well, I'm not sure about his name yet.  He looks almost identical to Annabelle. White with rusty-brown spots. Pretty!  Domino is mostly white with fewer spots and lighter color.

No more!  I've had enough of sadness in losing dogs.

I do have plenty of new baby kittens.  Three with no tails.  I have to get pictures. Four born April 14, four the 15th.   all cute and sweet. One calico, my favorite, just like her mother!

    Watch for pictures.  bjp

Hi Betty Jo, sorry to hear of your loss.  I lost my beloved cat to kidney failure in December.  She was sixteen and a half.  I still miss her every day.  But I did find a book that helped, called "Pet Loss" by Julia Harris.  Hope that helps.

Hi Betty Jo, I'm so sorry for you lost. I had a pet dog who died just months back. someone had poisoned her. She died suffering, which was the saddest part. Pets can be part of the family to us, when we lose them, it is really hard breaking.

Aww that's so sad. I know how you feel, my
dog died about a month ago. It was so heartbreaking!
I've had her since i was three. She was 12 years old.

I still have her sister, who is 7 years of age. My mom and me
are trying to adopt a dog from the humane society, to replace
all the love that was once there.

Maybe you should do the same. smile
