      I find it appalling that those in power were voted in to office based on their affiliation with a certain religious faith.
      
      I reject all religions, because they each defeat the purpose of life.
      
      Those who follow a religion or religious belief, can not be of good conscience, because they themselves answer to a higher authority other than themselves.
      
      That shows that they perpetuate a hoax of unity and altrusitic notions that apply. It proves that the politicians truly believe that man and woman needed to be told what to do, when truth is revealed- these people are NOT interested in what's fair or just.
      
      So, a flat-out .... NO!

      Eveybody gets equal rights.
      Equal rights has to do with laws, not religions or the lack of them.

      No but they have a right to vote the same as anyone else and since were a representative democracy then the majority rules. That means whether you agree with the vote or not, as a citizen of this country, you're obligated to obey the laws of this country.

         Fortunately because of the constitution and the 14th amendment, the will of the majority to oppress any minority never stands for very long.  Equality is coming, and soon.

   Actually, the answer is still no, but I just get a feeling that there is a reason and I often get unwillingly dragged into political or religious debates that do not interest me in the slightest

            My new book The Spell of Religion and the Battle Over Gay Marriage should give you all a queue into my agenda:) I've been debating for over a year now with those who oppose gay marriage (I'm straight) and I'm still looking for an answer to this simple question:  How will gay marriage affect straight marriage negatively?  .Thought maybe someone here could give me the long sought after answer.

   I will add on a more serious note....
   
   The true and honest concept or definition of 'Equal Rights' should mean that nobody dictates who is or isn't entitled to them, else their would not be equality.
   
   Any attempt to discriminate erradicates equality, and thus we will never have an equal society, equality is a false concept which is applied by governments solely as a form of law.
   
   The closest thing to equality within society as a whole and as a concept is actually communism, so it makes me laugh to see American's preaching equality whilst they have the largest proportion of it's citizens incarcerated and one of the largest rich-poor divides in the world. Add to that a huge gap in educational standards between rich and poor, and the exclusion of 40+ million people from your healthcare system.....
   
   Maybe certain religious systems would actually enhance the broad concept of 'equality' within capitalist systems such as the USA or UK. Buddhism probably would, Buddhists are pretty liberal and open minded.... I dont think they would let people die because they are Mexican if thats what you mean.

         Oh Boy, here we go again. Gays have the same rights everyone else has they are the ones that want more rights than the rest of us. So, not to mention their wish and yours to violate the sanctity of marraige, they want the right to ruin anything Christian. If they are given the right to marry and a church refuses to marry them , then here comes the ACLU to sue what ever church that refuses. Don't say it won't happen because you damn well it will. Otherwise you would settle for a civil union that assures the rights their after.
         
         Now lets see how equal works. Equal means everybody has the same, in this case that would mean rights. So lets review:
         
         gayman can't marry a gayman
         straightman can't marry a straightman
         ok so far?
         gayman can't marry straightman
         straightman can't marry gayman
         Still ok?
         gayman can marry any variety of woman
         straightman can marry any variety of woman
         
         Where are gays denied any rights the rest of us have? C'mon you can answer it, don't be shy, we all know the answer. Thats right, they aren't denied any right that the rest of us have. Since it has been recognized that marriage is between a man and a woman, not only in the Bible but as a social custom. The only rational option is a civil union unless of course your quest is to destroy organized religion in America, then you would be foolish to think Christens are going to roll-over and play dead.
         
         Find a different cause this ones a loser.

   Oh children how long will you walk in the darkness of Ignorance and deceit?
   
   See it how you like but Life is God and God is life.
   
   If a society totally reject the concept of God ( higher authority) what are the possible resulting scenarios?
   
   1) they will willingly submit themselves to a God they have created to ensure their existence, whether it be a law, a man, a thing, or a combination of one or more of the preceding.
   
   2) they all will be seeking to be that higher authority until they go back to option one out of necessity of survival or they are reduce to on existence or a god without a domain.
   
   3) Each one of us seek the good for our neighbors out of a pure heart guided by truth within.
   Then that will flourish without need  except for Truth and Goodness.
   
   But is not Option 3 the message that Jesus himself preached while he was here in the flesh and now here in the Spirit?     
   
   That the kingdom of God is established in us and among us as we each love our neighbor as our self. And He himself being Truth and the only way to the father of all Goodness and perfection?
   
   My Children open Your eyes and see indeed who you are.
   Avoid all hypocrisy from the heart for that is Christ and God.

      Beautifully stated.  Many in the GLBT community are true believers, and Love God and Christ. Those whose hearts have been opened understand that God made them exactly how they are and He loves them as they are.  It's only those who have been overcome by darkness that can't see the beautiful souls of those they persecute.

       You are right.  The arc of justice always bends towards justice.  It just sometimes takes longer depending on the issue when the dark energy of some who are blinded by religious dogma keeping pulling toward injustice.  It's the way of the universe to grant all people equality.

    What is patently obvious in this thread is the bone ignorance about the rights of gay couples.
    There are several problems with the current situation when it comes to personal and property matters. At least Google them and find out what they are before saying they have equal rights. The fact is they do not!

       Trying to educate those who refuse to educated themselves because they believe the voice in their head telling them to discriminate is Gods, has been extremely difficult. When I became an ally and advocate for the GLBT community I had a whole family and network of friends I needed to persuade on this issue.  So far, I'm still working on it.
