Christmas in days gone by

   I'm curious to know how your childhood christmases (if you celebrate it) compare with the christmases you have as an adult or teen.  What's different?  What changed?  How do those changes make you feel?

   But seriosuly now that I am older and can pay for the gifts and give gifts, I enjoy it even more. I've always been one who LOVES to give gifts to family and friends. So I guess the magic never left.

      I never really believed in Santa Claus as being the mythical man he is depicted as.  I always thought of him as the embodiment of the spirit of giving.  So... in that sense, he's very real.

   before it gets me so excited thinking that Im gonna wear my new christmas clothes that my parents bought me, but now of course,I still have the same excitement but in turn getting my kids reaction when they see their new stuff.

   we were lucky as children - got xmas & chanukah in the same house every year. best xmas memories were cutting down the defenseless trees year in year out- the anticipation of the blade in the bark, trudging through thigh deep snow with the crystalline shafts of sunlight delineating the frost in the air, & the excitement and anticipation watching others prepare to open their presents, & the big, oversized, xmas lights - those were the best

   I think every child's christmas should be magical.  They shouldn't have to worry about anything, they just accept and give gifts, enjoy the traditions and the food, and even enjoy the belief in Santa while it lasts.
   
   My childhood christmases were mostly magical.  I had one christmas in particular that was horrendous, but for the most part I loved going downstairs early in the morning and looking to see how many presents were mine while I waited for the others to wake up.  We'd sit down with tea in our favourite mugs, and pass the presents out one by one, making a big show of it.  There were games played, movies watched, a giant eggs/bacon/croissants breakfast, and a huge chicken and ham dinner feast.  I loved the whole feeling of christmas more than I really loved getting the gifts.  I loved decorating for it, the smell of the bayberry wax figurine that still smells of bayberry after 32 years (it was from Avon, and only supposed to last 2 years!)
   
   Now... I left all my christmas decor in Ottawa when I moved to the west coast.  I have a new baby girl and my family is 3000 miles away.  I think it will still be magical, but in the way of the magic passing from one generation to the next.

   Putting out Santa's tray with carrots and milk for the reindeers and sherry and a mince pie for Father Christmas was the best part.  Also, posting our Christmas lists up the chimney.  We still get stockings even now we've all flown the nest but somehow not putting out Santa's tray seems all wrong!

   Most of us loved Christmas as kids, the wonder the lights and of course the gifts. That wonder and excitement are different as an adult. I don't like to shop to early because for me giving especially to my kids is overwhelming. I buy it I want to give it right away, I don't like to wait. For me the smile is the end result. Love to make my kids smile.

   I've made a circle when it comes to Christmas.  I ended up still liking Christmas and try not to get caught up in so much of the shopping for gifts stuff.
