Well maybe not my mother smile

It always surprises me how little many online home business owners know about creating a website, html, basic ftp'ing etc.  Well maybe I should not say "surprised", but not knowing how to creating a basic page can slow you down, especially with changes to Google Adwords.

And yet another one big_smile Would you stop spamming our forums, please?

Trust me, I will stop what you think is spamming

I thought this site was about sharing knowledge.

I thought the forums was a place to let people know about new hub pages.

On the main menu, under the "Hubs" link, you'll find the tab "Newest".

This is where you'll find new hubs - and that's where I initially saw one of yours.
EDIT: which has now gone. Shame - it looked like a good resource. Perhaps it can be restored.
EDIT2: the hub about PLURK is gone too. Methinks the moderators have a too itchy trigger finger today.

The forums is a place where we snap at each others ankles, tell tall stories, and sometimes get serious.
There's also lots of special interest areas.

Have a look around, have fun. And Don't be too frightened by our attack dog, Misha.
He's OK when you get to know him.
But he took off my left arm when IO started here too smile

Peter, there are literally thousands of people posting hubs here. If everybody starts promoting their hubs on forums, we all get buried. Hence the rule. smile
    Really, nothing personal.

    Misha,
I know that it's bad form to post here asking people to look at your hub.

But what about the case where a discussion is going on.
Are you saying that If I have written a hub on that issue, I am not allowed to provide a link to it ?

  6. Marisa Wright profile image86
    Marisa Wrightposted 15 years ago

That's an important distinction, Eric.  If a discussion is going on and you have a Hub that contributes valuable information to that discussion, go ahead and post.

I don't often do that (maybe because I don't have that many Hubs with valuable information that's relevant??), but I often post Hubs by other Hubbers.

  7. Misha profile image63
    Mishaposted 15 years ago

    What Marissa says. smile

You can try to search the forums, we had several discussion on the issue, and consensus is you can't open a thread to promote your hub, but if your hub is related to the topic of existing thread and adds to the discussion, you are free to post the link.

I deleted the hubs, but have replaced them.

To be honest I was "pissed off" to be accused of spamming when I do not promote anything that I am involved with or make money from.

When I first came to the forums I read the rules and FAQ.  I then started to read the forums to see what people were talking about.  I discovered a few travel related ones that hub members promoted in their posts.  So I though it was ok and the way things worked and created a travel one myself.

It is ok if this thread stays up, but I would like to have the other ones that you so graciously moderated in deleted.  I felt insulted by your post and method for accusing people of spamming.

Next time take a newbie to the side privately and let them know the "unwritten" rules.

It is not practical to take all the newbies to one side. This is a typical example that I picked at random from the few dozen that were started today smile:

Starting a forum thread just to promote your hub is considered spam here. There is a message at the top of the page before you post that says this:

"Please note that advertising and promotional posts in the forums will be deleted and may result in the closing of your HubPages account. Please use the Forums in the spirit of community! forum rules"

It is hard to mistake that.

    Welcome to hubpages.

      I beg to differ.
When I arrived here I certainly did not think that a link to my first hub, which contained no links, advertising, or self promotion would be considered as advertising or promotion.

Perhaps the special meaning of these words at Hubpages could be emphasized in the instructions at the top of that page.

Maybe add "Links to your own hubs are normally considered as promotional".

It is good that all of these responses have been posted here, helps clear things up.

However, (sorry I am hard headed), "Please note that advertising and promotional posts on the forums will be deleted" is up to interpretation.  I did not miss it, I though it meant what spam really is, promoting self interest that conveys a benefit upon the spammer.  Since I do not promote anything that benefits me, I thought I was ok.  I have been in other forums where people blantantly post affiliate sites, which are links to external sites.  I promoted internal links, and a newbie like me would not think that was spamming.

And just to be clear, I spent a day reading the forums first.  I found many promotional links to hub pages.  In fact one inspired me to write my hub on Thailand.  So I did research the forums first.

So here I am, slapped around a bit but now more aware smile

It goes to show you, you can learn something new everyday.

    Eric,
You may want to open a thread on this on suggestions forum if you feel so strong about the issue.

    Peter,
I can't really add anything new to what I posted here and wrote to you in email. Again, I am not a staff, I am a regular hubber like you, I don't have anything personal against you, and having take a look at you hubs I think you not leaving will benefit both you and Hubpages.

And I don't see me saying anything to be pissed of about. At the first promotional post of yours I saw I just imformed you neutrally that such posts are considered spam in this community. When I got to this one (and I believe it was the fifth promotional post of yours), I was definitely not neutral anymore, and I think it was justified.

  11. pfuller profile image60
    pfullerposted 15 years ago

It was not justified because all of my posts were done before you moderated them.

It was not like you found one, issued your comment, then I kept on posting regardless.  In fact if I had received an email saying "Hey, I know you are new here so we have this unwritten rule etc etc"

Your "moderating" techniques hit me all at once when I received your first and only email on the subject.

I fail to see what is so hard about making it clear in the forum rules that self promotion of hub pages is considered spamming and not left up to some "unwritten rule"

Now, given all of that, being a moderator is a tough job. I respect those who do it in a clear, consistent manner.  I am a professional accountant, so we have this written rule about consistency smile

  12. Misha profile image63
    Mishaposted 15 years ago

    Peter,

Would you read what I wrote, please? I am NOT a moderator. I am a regular hubber. Those forums are mostly user moderated, and staff usually do not interfere, except for when real moderator action is needed like closing the thread, deleting the post or snipping a link from the post.

And please re-read what Mr Knowles (also not a moderator) had to say - it explains where this rule is actually written smile

This matter's only just been brought to my attention.  I'll be looking over the forum rules today to see how I might make them more clear to newbies.  In the meantime, a few things that bear restating.

    Peter:

To clarify, Misha is not a member of the HubPages staff, nor does he have power to remove or moderate posts.  He merely commented on your threads to let you know that the practice of starting threads solely for the purpose of posting a link (to a hub or otherwise) is considered spam in these forums.  It was I who removed them (all but one, where I snipped the link and left an explanation), and I did email you privately last night to explain why.

I've also responded by email to the correspondence between yourself and Misha that you forwarded to me this morning.  Whether or not the hubs themselves were promotional, starting 4 or 5 threads to announce their publication is excessive.  We are more tolerant of links to within HubPages on these forums than we are of outbound links, but please keep them to within the context of a relevant discussion, or where solicited for advice.

Misha (and all other spam-hunting forum users):

In future, please do not respond to threads of this kind.  Simply report them, and I will take appropriate action, including link snipping, post deletion, and/or explanation of the rules, as I see fit.

Nobody likes being called out in public, and most of these offences are truly out of ignorance.  Putting someone else on the defensive achieves nothing.  We want to keep these forums as a place where criticism is constructive, and respond to innocent mistakes with gentle redirection.

Mishaposted 15 years agoin reply to this

Well, my practice was kind of opposite smile

If I thought we got a hardcore spammer I did not really bother posting anything there except may be for making fun of them - and just reported the post. When I saw a normal person who for whatever reason just got overly promotional - I tried to explain.

OK, point taken, I'll just report such cases from now on. And hope you don't mind me making fun of genuine spammers big_smile
