               Americans sat on the sidelines and gloated as the defeated Russians pulled outta there with their tails between their legs...a good chance exists that the Americans will suffer a similiar fate before a year and a half has passed.

                  Take off the handcufffs and forget about fighting a PC engagement, and the outcome will be quite different than that the Russians experienced.
                  
                  We are also there for different reasons than the Soviets. The Soviets were there to expand their empire, we are not. Every other fighting force that has been defeated in Afganistan has gone the for that purpose.
                  
                  Ours is a different kind of fight, and is not waged for the dominance of the Afgans, but the illimination of terrorism and the evil from which it grows.

   Isn’t the 18-month time frame interesting? Just think of it, I wonder how they came up with a plan for an 18-month surge?
   
   Lets see all the soldiers will have shipped out by the Spring and come fall, be forgotten and/or ignored by the media just in time for the 2010 Mid-term elections.
   
   And oh how happy will we be when all our boys are coming home, oh look, just in time for the Presidential primaries of 2012 election.

   The US will only be able to get out of Afghanistan when ready to admit defeat and I do not think that is going to happen. The thought of terrorists 'winning', don't think thats going to happen. I think Obama would like to end the war but the harsh reality is, if he does pull troops out now or even in the near future it will likely be a bigger threat to the western world then staying in the war. Once Bush decided to take this road we were all committed whether we like it or not and by not following through we are in more danger then if we had not gone into war in the first place. It sucks but I am not going to let it get me down!
