finally make it through the regular season and into the playoffs...through the first round, beyond the 8th inning of game 6 of the NLCS and go all the way?

Twenty games over .500.  Best record in the majors.  No SI covers (and, so help me, if they shoot one.....).  Or is it all for naught and will the goat and the black cat and all the SI covers of years past still cast their pall?

    1908.

Perhaps...but the Cubbies have Big Z coming back and then there's Soriano due back right after the break.  And I'm truly enjoying Reed Johnson's contribution.

It's a long season, and there are so many variables. You could look at recent history and think they've got a chance. The Red Sox took 86 years between titles and now have two in four years. Chicago White Sox went a long time too. Cleveland very nearly made it to the series last year (glad they didn't), so why not the cubbies?

I used to live in Southern Illinois, and became a Cubs fan just because I preferred them to the Cardinals. We used to joke that if the Red Sox and the Cubs both made it to the World Series at the same time, both teams would find a way to lose!

So if the Sox could get the monkey off their back, why not the Cubs?

They've dropped four straight...yikes!  Split the season series with the White Sox so now the dastardly Cards are only 2 1/2 back.  BUT Cubs are in San Francisco tomorrow and the Cards have an off day, so we'll see.

Ramirez's bat has cooled off a bit -- Lee's has heated up some.  And we should have Z back by the weekend when we play St. Louis, Johnson right behind him and then Soriano around the break.  Eyre's down, but hopefully not for long.

It is a long season, though, so I'm trying not to get my hopes up.

I don't know at this moment in time.  It's a bit difficult to say.  I don't want to jinx this team and say yes they will get it done.  This is a team that hasn't been to the World Series since 1945.  It's possible but I don't know.
