Despite being disappointed by last years outcome, I'm looking forward to AI 9. Although, once it's on, I tend to become obsessed and since I review it, I spend WAY to much time on it! It's wild to think that in a few months I may be totally invested in something that won't change my life a bit!

I like the show but I have to say it is really funny to see some of the try outs.

Actually, Idol HAS changed my life...or at least preserved it.  We voted hardcore for one and only one contestant (so far), namely Carrie Underwood.  When her first CD came out, I had a copy in the Subaru and played it LOTS during runs I was making in 2006 back and forth between Arizona and Montana every month.  Her music kept me awake even better than some of my favorite comedy tapes--I only wrecked the car once!! lol

I used to listen and still sometimes to Paula Abdul, when she first started out and I'd love to follow any of her work, because I think she happens to be one of the best dance teachers, dance has seen in a long time.

But, as for the show itself. It's a scam. The show is already pre-determined, even with the audience playing along. It's rigged. smile

Is the American one as bad as the UK one (X Factor)?

    Cagsil:

I don't agree that the show is rigged. I would say that it's manipulated. You're pretty much a shoe-in if you are of a particular religious bent and from a particular part of the US (was that politically correct enough?). This region makes it a point of pride to dominate Idol voting.

So if you happen to be a singing Baha'i from Alaska - well, you can forget about it.

But for me, it's not about who wins, it's the talent we get to see that otherwise might not have had a shot.

Ghost32: Arizona to Montana? You have my sympathy. That's some really desolate country. People who aren't from the West just don't understand how vast it is! And if you have to do it in the snow - it's life threatening. Glad you made it through that in one piece - even if your car didn't fare so well. The last time I drove from Reno to Los Angeles I was one angel away from hitting a road divider at high speed. That would have been that!

I do appreciate that they seem to have cut down on showing quite as many of the horrible auditions, at one point it just seemed like they were being mean about it.

The show won't be the same without Simon, I thought Beckham did a great job as the 4th host....I hope Ellen is at least that good.

Simon is bringing X Factor which is much more international. Not sure what the reason is, although the age range may be the factor.

I've never watched it before, but I just found out that I know one of this years contestants, so if she makes it on the air, I shall watch and vote for her. Her name is Siobhan Magnus.

It's a pretty good show.  I usually don't start watching till they get to Hollywood.  I was in the music business as an artist and musician for about 20 years.  It still makes me uncomfortable to watch some poor, untalented individual who's been misled by their friends and family into thinking their great, bomb out.  I'll watch for you friend tho.

I like to watch the tryouts, best, and then when they get down to only 5 or so. I can't believe some of those that try out really  believe they can sing, their mother and friends must be a bunch of liars...

Did anyone see that show that only lasted one season, where they tricked 2 ppl into  thinking they were great, I think it was called The Worst Singer in America or something. They were downright mean in what they did, but the chick that won was so dumb, she was just happy to have a title....

    What's American Idol?

  14. SandyMcCollum profile image63
    SandyMcCollumposted 14 years ago

American Idol is a show where unknowns can audition for a shot at the big prize, being America's idol and doing a huge singing contract as a prize. It's really funny at first, then gets down to real competing and the audience votes for the winner.

I love it when the competition really begins and you watch the producers hone these rough diamonds into something unique, creative and fun to watch.  Like Adam - he was rather good, but by the end of the show he was incredibly wonderful and I could care less about all the hoopla.  There were a number of rather stubborn performers last year who would have had a better chance if they had taken the opportunity more seriously and actually made themselves over a bit!  fun - but the 2 hours shows are difficult for me - way too much advertising!

I can't stand to watch till at least mid-season. The early try-outs are not just pathetic, but actually heart-wrenching, and I don't think they should be airing these melt-downs, most-embarrassing-moments for the world to see. I understand it brings ratings and money, but I disagree with it.

I'm very much at sixes and sevens with the whole show. There is some tremendous talent on the show to be sure. That's not the issue for me. Buying and selling lives seems like such a good idea t the time, but even now you can see the effects of contract on such people as Leno and Conan, and how they are fighting ruthlessly to break, amend or whatever, so they can have a life to do as they wish. These young kids are enslaved by choice, and in a few years, they'll have had a gut full and want something better. It's not all bad, mind you, but it's certainly no picnic.

I enjoy watching the show once they get to Hollywood.  It's fascinating to see how people respond to the opportunity and pressure.  Some people rise to the challenge and become better than ever; others not so much.

Last year's talent was the best ever.  It will be interesting to see if this year will be as good.

I only watch the auditions at the beginning, just to see some retards who just want to get on TV and they can't sing, then the rest of the show holds no interest for me as there are too many of these cobbled together reality talent shows and this is what makes TV utter shite for me!

haha she's the only one i missed! i was busy the night of the first Hollywood show...

I usually only watch American Idol when it gets up to around the top 24, and, I still can't figure out why they continue to show these thousands of people showing up to audition, as the main judges never really see them all.

I was watching a tv show with Paula Abdul, and she says they really only see about 130 people out of the thousands who show up. So what is the point.

There was a guy this year who showed up to audition in a bikini.
This is the kind of stuff that makes the show look bad. It seems that the network doesn't really care who gets on the show in the early stages, so why bother.

The only reason I am watching this season is because Ellen is on the show, otherwise I would skip it. Once Simon leaves, I probably won't watch it at all.

I certainly won't watch his new show.
