Though some people do not know it, this is not a gesture that is universal.
There was a famous photo of American servicemen (that had been captured from the USS Pueblo ) where several sailors convinced their North Korean captors that the gesture was a "Hawaiian  good luck sign". The N Koreans had sent the photo to the US to prove that the prisoners were well.
Other cultures have other gestures that mean the same thing-- but oxymoron may not be aware that  the middle finger salute is considered rude by many people.

Come on Rochelle, I think all English speaking countries share this gesture, and most of the world is aware about it. You can see it on streets of Moscow nowadays, too smile

Guess you all see something I don't see. Spent some time in Greece. They use five fingers not one. It was said to mean F___ You, your father and mother, your brothers and sisters, everyone ever related to you, and everyone you ever knew, and
everyone you will ever know. Now that's a gesture.

The omnipresent F@#$ off sign, now that's God for you.

If everyone put their middle finger up all over the world at the same time, I might take this as a sign that "God" existed....

      lol

Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?

  11. Rochelle Frank profile image91

Sri Lankans use the index finger, In Iran Afganistan and parts of Italy and Greece it's  a 'thumbs up" . The OK sign is offesive in Brazil or somewhere.

Actually there are a lot of refrences on the net about how  different cultures use the different gestures and body language to mean different things.

Nevertheless, your point is well taken, Misha, and I agree that it might have been offered to draw out a  negative reaction. Which it did.

Now... more to the point.. where is God, anyway? We have questions!

  12. oxymoron profile image57

It's not my intention to show a rude gesture. I did not know the Other Meaning of it until I read these arguements here. That photo is a piece of my portfolio. I changed my profile image just because I did not want that to be controversial. Believe me or not, that is the truth.

Please, just close it. Chat on topic smile

I'm thinking that in polytheistic spiritualities there may be many gods and or one overriding god, that exist with us in non-physical form in the physical plane. Whereas monotheism generally would have it that God exists in a different dimension,
accessible through religious figures, like Christ or a church or prayer depending.

This is one viewpoint, there are basically three viewpoints where God and man is concerned and their merger or union.

A- Only God can come in our life, its up to him,its been destined.
b- Its up to us ,man to go towards God -seek him out.
c- Its both ways as you go towards God-God comes towards to.

      All three are correct.smile

God is a social construct, and it resides in your head and the head of everyone else that believes in it.

God is a meme, and in as much as God does good, God can be said to reside in the charitable actions of those that believe in it (it being God).

God is the people who believe in God, Organized Religion is merely organized worship of the idea of God that makes up the primary motivational factor within a given God social construct.

God does not literally exist as a separate entity with it's own intelligence and emotive functions.

my question which I put in another thread earlier is.

      1. Mark Knowles profile image56
Mark Knowlesposted 15 years agoin reply to this

You mean you thought the idea of god up yourself? No one told you about the idea of god? You came to this conclusion in a vacuum?

One day you thought to yourself, "Where did I come from? Hmmmm..... I don't know, therefore I must have been created by a god who is all-powerful and created everything. It is the only sensible explanation." lol

          *no body

            lol

I was asking a simple question.

Which actually needs an answer before it is possible to make sense of your question.

The simple answer is that some one told you there was a god and it is then in your head.

Atheism is not a philosophy, it is a lack of belief in a non-existent god.

So - this is the question I am posing you:

Did you think of god yourself or did some one put that idea in your head?

Many people are raised atheist/agnostic and given an open ended option to believe if they really want to (by their parents).

So this is hardly a valid point your making.

You sound angry Zarm, and you should be, you have every right to be and I know how that feels.  Not to the extent of what you have been through, but it was hard going through the initial shock of what I read in the Bible and what was really going on.

It is messed up however, I wouldn't go to the extent of saying that it is all because of religion etc.  Obviously you are smart enough to know that with or without religion, death, murder, starvation etc. would still happen.

When you first joined HP, you were a lot nicer to me because I am pretty fascinated with science and the Universe and all that stuff, then upon a disagreement, your attitude shifted.  It just seems (and I only say seems) like you really dispise anyone who believes in God, but you don't seem to care that for the "other" good people out there who do believe in God and really do try to do good things with their life and others, that you are not saving them from the dogma associated with relgion.

You can't save them, they cannot save you from anything.  If a person really believes in God and does actually care, then they will take the time to go and find out for themselves what is going on in the world.

Essentially, if you can follow me on this, you are doing the same thing.  An ignorant christian preaches without knowlege, or speaks verses and has no idea what it means, or has maybe read just a portion of the Bible.

Maybe they never thought about looking for the original meanings of the words, maybe they got suckered into the "dogma" (which I do no disagree with you on) and figure all is good no matter what because accepting Jesus will save them from Hell so they have free riegn to do whateve they want and will be forgiven.  Who knows....really.

I guess what I am trying to say is,  if you wanted to teach people that it is a bunch of bologna, then why wouldn't you use what they read to prove to them that it is a bunch of crap.  For instance,

There is a place called Hell, it actually exist, but what is it?  It literally means the grave.  So those people out there saying, everyone goes to Hell, well yeah, everyone is going to die.  And you know the rest I am sure, about Sheol and Hades etc. That the term hell fire came because back then they would keep a fire lit and burn the dead bodies.  The eternal Hell.  Like being cremated.  smile

So, you could do a lot better then arguing back and forth with people about why they are idiots for believiing in God because it doesn't do you or anyone else any justice and it just upsets people.

Although on the other hand, I do tend to agree with the people that are saying, "why are you on a religion forum if you don't desire to learn anything about relgion?"

Peoples religious affiliations or beliefs are not for you to decide whether it is good or not because you aren't them, you don't know how they feel.  You can have some understanding, but because you have given up the belief in God, then you don't know why people still hold on even if they know that what is being done in the "name" of God, (name being just a name like CHeech Marin) is not true.

You used Mark's line, that there is a better way, and there is, and I know Mark was using the Bible to try to show people why is is BS, but isn't verry effective because not even Mark knows why people hold on, and it is impossible for anyone to know how every single person in the world feels about any one thing.

Maybe you would be better at it.  smile  Then again, you might be thinking that I am trying to push my belief on you or something, but just like other people have said many times before on this forum.  "your blind to the othe side".  Which I can't see that you would be, just pissed off and bent, or upset about what has happened to you and what you see going on.

I suppose all I am saying is that I do take it personally when people point the finger.  We are all part of the problem as well as the solution.

    smile
