Top ten films that were released in the decade

   Now that the early 21st century is coming to an end as we head into the 2010's era.  i would like for you all to list your top 10 films that were released during the decade (2000-2009), and to explain why you think they should be in your top ten.

         that's tough for me to say. i have a lot of movies i could put on there, but there are some that are critically acclaimed that i have yet to see, that im affraid i would leave one deserving to be in it out.  however, i'll have to think about it.

            i feel the same way...there are movies i KEEP seeing pop up on best of the decade lists that i've never even seen, SOME i've only vaguely ever HEARD OF...
            
            i haven't even seen all of 2009's better crop of films (still haven't seen Public Enemies, among others)

      My first degree is in Theatre Arts and yet I have to tell you that I tend to gravitate more towards movies that made money and entertained people.

         I think this is why we see the category "arts AND entertainment"
         It goes to the question floating around HP recently. Are you trying to create art, or are you trying to make a living?
         I have a friend who is very intellectual, but he religiously watched Beverly Hills 90210 when it was on. He called it "brain candy". I suppose it was better than staring at a blank wall.
         
         LOTR is 3 of the 10 in my book. Before I saw the first one, I was skeptical. Book-to-movie rarely works well but this trilogy was outstanding.

   10. Inglourious Basterds - In completely technical terms, it is absolutely Tarantino's best.  It also happens to be his most suspenseful and emotionally exhausting.
   9. Children of Men - It features some of the best cinematography I've seen this decade.  Forget District 9, this is sci fi at its finest.
   8. The Wrestler - Mickey Rourke delivers what is arguably the best individual performance of the past 10 years.  The script is daring and unapologetically original.
   7. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - The best and most refreshingly unique love story we have seen in a long while.  Also contains some incredible trick photography.
   6. Spirited Away - For myself and many fans of animation, this was the movie that opened a whole new, vastly uncharted visual world.
   5. There Will Be Blood - Modern kin to classic American stories (Treasure of Sierra Madre, Citizen Kane) about the destructive effects of capitalism. 
   4. Pan's Labyrinth - del Toro joins the ranks of Jim Henson and Peter Jackson as a brilliant director who understands the darker realms of a children's fairytale.
   3. This Film Is Not Yet Rated - A devastating but important documentary about the MPAA's frightening stronghold on the contemporary film industry.
   2. The Royal Tenenbaums - Hilarious and poignant, this one utilizes Wes Anderson's signature filmmaking to the greatest effect.
   1. City of God - A passionate and stylized story based on the horrific real life slum wars of Rio de Janeiro.  No other film has stuck with me as mercilessly as this one.

         I really think that either capitalism: a love story or sicko should be on there somewhere.  I realize some people may not like Michael Moore, but he did bring to light some powerful and surprising things going on in the US and A.

            Not Bowling for Columbine?  I've admittedly yet to see the two films you've mentioned.  My exposure to his work is limited to Bowling (which was great) and Farenheit 911 (which I didn't really like).  His sentimentalist approach does kind of annoy me, but I do want to see his other movies. 
            
            I realized that in my Top 10 I didn't include any comedies, and there are 2 I think should be recognized:  Borat and Shaun of the Dead.  Both highly original and very very funny.

               Well although Moore did bring back the documentary genre back into films as they were dying before "Farenheit 9/11" came out.  However, i have to agree with ageofcake on this, and say that as much as his documentaries were intriguing to watch.  All his films tend to be extremely one sided, and he rarely gives you direct answers or conclusions to any of his films.  Just asks a lot of the right questions we should ask that we may have or have not thought of.

   There have been so many great films released this past decade! But Pixar's films, the final Star Wars films, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, and several biopic films like A Beautiful Mind and Walk the Line stand out from the rest to me.

      You generally went for very cerebral films, which is very cool.  I personally wasn't a huge fan of The Fountain, but I respected what Aronofsky was trying to do with it.  And Donnie Darko - eh, not for me.
      
      Overall, though, this was a very good list.  I wish more movie-goers had your taste.
