Photographer credit line

I'd love to see a photo credit line in the photo capsule.  It would be in addition to the caption and would be a hyperlink.  If you used it, you'd get "photo by [photographer's link]:" under the photo.

A large proportion of Hubbers use Creative Commons photos and this would enable us to use the proper attribution in the best possible place. It would also prompt people to remember to give attribution - something some people aren't even aware of, and which we all sometimes forget.

That's a great idea. I've been using a sep text capsule and the layout could be better (bit too big / floating in too much white space).

This is a great idea although, I think an active hyperlink would would open room for misuse. Allowing more space to give credit to the copyright owner along with a caption would be great.

I too think having hyperlink capability would open up the potential for too much abuse.

I'm not sure I see why, Relache - we can already hyperlink in the text of our Hubs, so I'm not understanding the difference.  I wouldn't suggest allowing HTML so it's not a banner, and I'm assumnig any link in these capsules would count towards the "overly promotional" limits as at present.

    I dont get it?

Why does a hyperlink included in the caption within a picture create any more opportunity for abuse than any other link capsule?

I realize this almost creates a banner capability, but one can always stick a link capsule below a photo capsule anyway.

    What am I missing?

Seems like such a built in option when used correctly would increase proper attribution and be more aesthetically pleasing, when "abused" its not much different than using two adjacent capsules.

She is not suggesting a  hotlinked image, its still just hyperlinked text

"when used correctly" is the key. I'm not opposed to it, I just think we responsible hubbers will be doing a whole lot more flagging for misuse. (People can't even read the FAQ do you really think they'll stick to the rules put in place all on their own?)

Richard, I'm still not getting why people would think this is a problem, when Hubbers can already include hyperlinks in the text.  What difference would one more linking opportunity make?  Am I missing something?

Marisa, I said I'm not opposed to your idea, and in fact think it is a good one.  As long as the hyperlink can't be made into an anchor text link, as it can in a text module, it will be harder to hide an affiliate links inside it.

Plus, it should be optional to use because I want to control as much as possible how my reader will click away from my hub so it benefits me.

If you have purchased the rights to use a photograph or visual image then you should credit the artist/photographer anyways - for copyright reasons and credit is a given.

However if it is your own work or stock photography (free) which I bet 80% of the shots are, it doesn't warrant a hyperlink with the amount of usage it would get percentage wise.

Most of the images I use, I get from either 123rf.com or fotolia.com and they are royalty free images which I pay for through a credit system. According to their TOS, I don't need to credit the photographer for any commercial use with my standard license.  I may credit the photograper if I so choose.

Also, there are many places on the web where one can host pictures, maybe the hyperlink can be used to link to that photo and use the other sites bandwith as we do when we load youtube videos.

Lyric, you might be surprised how many photos are neither of those.  I use Flickr extensively, as do many other Hubbers.  A lot of stock photo sites do ask for attribution - if not to the photographer, at least to the site.  Many people also use Wikimedia Commons, not understanding that many of those photos require attribution, too.

I see a lot of Hubbers using photos illegally - often innocently.  That's one of the other reasons why I think the credit line would be good, because it would make those people think about whether they need attribution.

thankyou - I agree, adding that would be very good.

I agree that this would be useful. I put acknowledgements at the bottom of the hub, but would be far happier having them in each photo capsule.

I vote "yes" to this idea.  I always put a credit line under the photo but a URL would be much better.

Empress, if by a credit line you mean that you put their URL in the caption, that's not good enough to satisfy the Creative Commons Licence requirements.  You must provide a hyperlink to the photographer, and the caption isn't a hyperlink.

Marisa that's not true.. the requirement for attribution states that it would be "nice" to link back and not an absolute requirement for CC licenses.

Thanks Richard, I've learned something!  However, I think I will continue to be "nice" - I expect people to hyperlink to me if they use my article, so the least I can do is reciprocate.

Do these kinds of links affect a page's score and/or make it vulnerable to being flagged as overly promotional?

I've read on these forums that linking to the same site over many Hubpages can get those pages flagged. Would this sort of linking to Flickr trigger that sort of thing?

I mainly ask because I've been getting my photos from freedigitalphotos.net, and their usage agreement requires a link to their site in exchange for free use of the image. As a result most of my Hubpages have a link to them and I'm wondering if that's a bad thing...

Any help you may have on this is appreciated.
