Question about buying traffic

   I have a question about buying traffic.
   
   If one signs up for adwords or some other ad program that guarantees a certain amount of traffic, does google count this traffic when they page rank you?

   No - not at all - the 2 things have nothing to do with each other.   Google doesn't rank you by traffic - sites like Alexa, Quantcast and Compete do that.  Google ranks you by:
   
   1) Overall theme relevance and keyword relevance of the page content
   2) Quality of inbound links
   3) Quantity of inbound links
   
   Each of the above would require a much more lengthy explanation.

   Alexa et als don't know WHERE the traffic comes from.  It is also VERY anecdotal, because Alexa determines ranking by counting up surfing habits of people with the Alexa toolbar installed.  Some markets have a disproportionate number of web surfers with or without the Alexa toolbar installed.  So, some industries have more accurate numbers than others.
   
   Also, unless your rank in Alexa is under 100K, any number above this is HIGHLY suspect, mainly because they don't really track you daily unless you rank under 100K (the lower the number, the more traffic you have, i.e. #1 in Alexa is highest ranked site).
   
   Another thing about Alexa is numbers swing WILDLY when your rank is over 100K.  I have sites that can go from rank 7,000,000 to rank 1,500,000 with an almost imperceptible rise in traffic to my site.  In other words, get just a couple more visitors per day than usual and Alexa will upgrade your (over 100K) rank by millions all of a sudden.
   
   And even if your rank is under 100K (which I have many sites that are), a highly ranked site (let's say around 50K) is only getting a couple hundred visitors per day!  The sites that are in the top 100 or top 1000 are in an entirely different league from those ranked 50-100K.

   What TrophyMan is saying is correct. Alexa stats are widely based on tracking activity of surfers with Alexa bar installed. Since most people who have Alexa bars are internet old timers and webmasters, your Alexa ranking will be heavily affected not only by how much traffic you have, but also what the focus of your site is.
   
   For example a webmaster focused blog with about 1000 unique visitors a day could have higher Alexa ranking than a celebrity focused blog with 4000 uniques a day.
   
   Alexa however still remains a decent tool to estimate the popularity of a particular domain name. From my personal experience (by checking out my personal sites) Compete gives more accurate results than Alexa.
   
   As for Google AdWords links - they are purely javascript based (not hard coded) and are not recognized as backlinks. It's just a way to send instant (paid) traffic to your site, but will not affect your SERP (search engine results page - aka your position in search engines) neighter positively, nor negatively.

      I can Misha, here it is:
      
      Mark, do you really need a boost in Alexa ranking? Thanks to Misha, I just found a very quick way to boost my Alexa rank (well, this quick method was not from Misha, he just provided a tip and my "stinking cap" was on so I came up with the rest. My site got a big boost from it, but I don't really care for Alexa ranking though!
      
      I intend to make money with this method, so when do you need to order, let me know....hahahahahaa!
