Rabbit Town Talk...

   Rabbit Town is a small community just north of Gainesville Ga. ... Or at least that is the only "Rabbit Town" I know of at the present time... But thats' beside the point... I raise rabbits for a living and as Easter quickly approaches, ( Jones Road Farms ) sells more pet rabbits than any other time of year !!! Funny how that works out... but anywho... I was just wondering how many Hubbers think its cool to have rabbits for pets... I know I keep 50 or a 100 around all the time just in case somebody comes by and wants to buy some of them. All I can say is,"It must be a labor of love..." because I actually loose money from a business standpoint... I work my butt off 7 days a week... But I love what I'm doing... Now whats up with that !?! If you have rabbits... Love rabbits... Or want to buy some rabbits... Please post your comment here... LOL

      I've cared for rabbits before and I've found them to be funny, intelligent and entertaining...far more than people give them credit for. My only concern, as with any animal, is to simply buy one as a pet just because "they're cute". They all require care and love and many families that adopt them as pets don't understand what it is they are getting into when they do.

         You're exactly right Moanalisa... Having a rabbit for a pet requires a lot of time and care on a daily basis... People that are used to having dogs or cats for pets expect the animals to look after themselves somewhat... But an animal that you keep in a pen or cage has to be fed and watered on a regular basis, besides the time you spend with them petting or training them. One good thing about having a rabbit for a pet when you have small children, it helps to teach them responcibility at a very early age... My youngest daughter and I built a fish pond for the yard when she was just a baby, and when she was old enough, she insisted on feeding the goldfish in the pond twice a day or more... She learned early on that your pets depend on you to look after them on a daily basis.

      I like rabbits, I had rabbits,I don't want to buy any rabbits, I am sticking to the more social type; cats for now.

   I used to raise rabbits for pets, show, and meat...I loved it, and I really miss them. There is a "business savvy" way to raise them (yep, I even wrote a hub about it ) but might not be so easy if you limit yourself to pets alone.

      Wychic,please tell me you don't love em,let folks look at em then Eat em!thats just wrong!How could you gain the little bunnys trust then.........It's to nuch to think about Ohhh lol.Mabey you shouldn't have eaten em...

         I'm much more up-front with them than with the men...they know that they're on my good side for now, but it won't last . Unlike those I must spontaneously decapitate, the rabbits are locked up in cages so they can't get away.

   as you will see from my do you like my pets hub I just had a bed experience with my pet rabbit, died for no obvios reason...wont get anymore too painful.....

   Don't you get like dead rabbits all the time? And don't you have to clean up a lot of feces? and don't they get diseases like the swine flu or something like that and you have to put them all down?
   
   I could not do it.. I'd be way too scared to get like.. all sorts of shitty diseases from rabbits.

   I raise the younger rabbits for pet choices for my customers... The older rabbits seem to find space in my freezer, or I have customers that buy them from me after they are cleaned... I keep my rabbits in clean pens on stands up off the ground and harvest the manure for my organic vegetables I sell... I haven't had a problem with any diseases because I don't introduce new stock without placeing them in quarenteen for 30 days before introducing them to the rest of the herd... I manage to raise close to 1000 rabbits a year with no problems... but it does require a lot of devotion... I feed and water twice a day, 7 days a week... My breeders are my pets... The rest are just stock...

      Nice! I ranged around 500-800 a year. I had an advantage in that I live close enough to the Canadian line that I could contract them for commercial meat animals...I don't know if they're illegal for commercial sale ALL through the US, but it is here in Wyoming.

         Commercial rabbits are fine, but I live in Northeast Georgia and we don't have any processing facilities nearby... Its over 300 miles 1 way to anywhere that will buy them in bulk for processing... Kind of sucks, but I manage to do alright with the customers I have...

   I love rabbits! I love all cute and fuzzy animals though. I have an uncle whom is very strange, but the biggest sucker for bunnies..
   
   This uncle of mine is a criminal, a top one. At one point in the 80's, he was the most wanted criminal in NZ..But every time he would come to visit, he would have a bunny in his jacket, peeking up from the collar. Strange, criminal, but he has the softest spot for animals, especially rabbits.

   I have raised rabbits since 10yrs old. Am now down to 4 Flemish Giants. Bred Dwarfs, French lop, English lop, English Angora and lion heads before the accident.
   Rabbits are so peaceful. They relax you on a bad day. I made enough cash to keep them fed and healthy. I have two big bucks and two does coming into breeding in the spring. It is so lovely seeing baby flemish giants hopping around.
   Will do a Hub on em soonish
