I didn't read the links posted previously but I can offer some advice.

You probably already know this stuff but here I go, lol.

Trim your hair every six weeks. The ends will always get damaged so it is best to take a bit off to remove the worst areas.

Make sure you brush your hair when dry, not wet.

Avoid twisting it around your fingers. ( I still do this and it is a bad no-no!)

When tying it up, braiding, styling-etc. do not tie it tightly as this stresses the shaft.

I went to a natural shampoo (diluted African black soap with my own mix of other ingredients) and it took care of most of my breakage. I do not wash my hair daily.

I have been using a banana hair mask. It works really well as long as you strain it VERY well before use. I use cheesecloth. Do not squeeze the mixture through the cheesecloth- allow it to drip slowly into a bowl. Then strain it a few more times (add water as necessary).

If you do not remove as much of the particles as possible they will stick to your shafts- it looks like lice eggs and is hard to remove. I looked like a chimpanzee grooming herself when I did the mask wrong. lol

Avocado is good too but may make your hair oily if it is fine like mine. Once a week I do a deep conditioning oil mask. I am using castor oil mixed with coconut oil now.

If you're using a boar bristle brush use it correctly or it will break your hair.

I always comb my hair with a smooth, wide-tooth comb before brushing. This helps stop a lot of breakage.

Unless you have a good conditioner (leave-in works the best for me), avoid using glycerin in dry weather (winter time especially).

Eat well. This is the most important step to healthy hair. Nothing you put on already grown hair will truly "heal" it.

I feel your pain! And good luck. :-)

From  a hairdressers point of view that is fantastic advice!  Also realise too that it is normal to lose anything up to 100 hairs a day.  You could also work at supplementing your diet with a vitamin supplement esp for HAIR, SKIN & NAILS - its usually these three that lack calcium that is needed for strength.

        :-) Thanks.

Vitamins are something I always forget to take for the sake of my hair and nails. I should buy some.

Your hair falls out but at the same time will grow back unless your diet is poor. I would suggest taking vitamins too.

While fellow hubbers have offered excellent advice, I would like to suggest that you get your thyroid tested. Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism are common disorders that are not always detected and can cause hair loss. I have Hypothyroidism and the most noticeable symptom was that I lost large amounts of hair for no apparent reason.

Drink plenty of water in a day and maintain a healthy diet. Other than that you should always keep your scalp clean and never rub your hair or scalp vigorously while you shampoo. It will damage the roots leading to hair fall. Try 1 guava a day, it will make the roots stronger and also clean your system. If still problem persists immediately consult a doctor since hair fall can cause due a lot of hormonal problems.smile

Those that have posted that it could be something serious are correct.  In my daughter's case her hair loss which started in her second year of university turned into a diagnosis of colon cancer six years later.  If only we had known then what we know now.  Get it checked out with your physician!  It is your body's way of telling you that something is out of whack.
