Getting too personal

   When we express our feelings such as poetry or journal entries on HubPages, are we getting too personal?  How personal is too personal?

      I think that's up to the individual.
      
      I'm surprised at the amount of soul-baring that happens here - some Hubbers are very into the community aspect of the site, and I think they forget it's not just Hubbers who will read what they write. 
      
      If someone wants to reveal all in a Hub, that's their choice - however I do think they have a responsibility to consider what effect their revelations could have on their family or other people who might be involved.

      I write poetry, but it doesn't reflect my  intimate feelings. I don't write about my personal life. Only superficial things I can share with everybody.
      My inner self is for me only.

      I love to write poetry, I used to write more poetry back in the nineties, and even received two Golden Poet Awards. I think poetry does often undress the soul, although, it is up to the poet to use discretion when writing. Good poetry does take some removal of one's defensive layers, and one must be frank and risk it sometimes, if you truly want to be a good poet and touch your readers risk is essential.

      I agree. I think it's ok to express yourself and if you feel comfortable writing about your life, you should but keep the personal bedroom stuff in the bedroom.

   The two hubs I've posted are simply examples and not self-promotion.
   
   These two hubs have the most personal kinds of affects/effects I've been able to publish without problems.
   
   The first one is about my father.
   
   The second is about a relationship between friends. It borderlines sensual and erotica writing.

   I'd say its more open to interpretation as to each individual would regard as 'too personal'. Some may say one's sex life, emotions, marriage, friendship details, confessions.
   
   As for many, it is an outlet and some sort of way to let loose.
   
   However, knowing that people crave attention in ways, insert the shocker factor here.
   
   Personally I choose to divulge little, as I am a fairly private person, and rather favor that way. So depending how social people are can also factor.
   
   Then again it circles back to the open interpretation of each person, and what one perceives.
   
   That's just my opinion though.

   I agree, it's up to the person and how much they want to share with the world.
   
   I have a few of my poems here, but very intimate, erotic poetry of mine will never be on HP. but that's my choice.
   
   the online world is the platform here, also here in the forums.

   I love poetry and writing poems may or may not be about your personal experiences. It may just be a way of seeing things through somebody else's eyes. Not all poets have necessarily experienced what they write about so I feel it is a reasonably safe means of writing about personal experiences without actually stating that it is your personal experience.

   I think the anonymity that the web offers can make it an especially safe place to discuss things you otherwise wouldn't. My deepest held feelings are for God and strangers.

   I don't have any illusions that it really matters that much what I think of personal stuff in hubs - however, I defend everyone's right to write personal things and it doesn't matter whether I like it or not - it's their right, within the HP rules, of course.

    To what has already been said here, I'd add that it is wise to remember that the internet is very much a public forum.  Ask yourself if you would mind your employer or a future employer reading it, (for example.)  If the answer is no, then it's probably too personal.

    I'm probably as guilty as anyone of posting personal material but hey, that's what I know.  If it helps make my point, so be it.  I've found it's those personal examples that provide the most insight.
    
    By the way, what do you think this bump on the back of my leg could be?????

       I think personal stuff is fine, some of my hubs are very personal. It's kinda like therapy for me when I'm dealing with something or someone puting it on paper so to speak makes it less "threatening"
