   One of A Texan's posts has me wondering...am I a redneck?? What is a redneck, really?

      haha i'm a redneck lmao ... i dont know what classifies anyone as a redneck but it comes in part to having a tan neck but white back and chest.. usually the lower arms are tan too... farmers tan heck idk lol

   But after I saw a few episodes of "My Big Redneck Wedding," I discovered that there are rednecks all over the US! They're not restricted to the South.

      haha yup there are ... i have been in arizona almost a month now and we saw what we call the redneck truck(covered in mud) and i was like heck yeah thats what i'm talking bout .. personally i like "rednecks" compared to barbies and kens lol

   My first husband used to call me a hillbilly. I have always been proud of the fact of my roots. I will find my Grandpa's song about our clan sometime and put it in a hub. At any rate, habee you know what a redneck is, you've seen The Dukes of Hazzard. Boss Hogg and the deputy, Cletus was it? they were rednecks.

      I always consider being called a "redneck" (and I've been called that as well as "hillbilly") a compliment too.
      No matter how the other person says it.
      
      'Cause I is proud 'a' bein' a hillbilly, really.
      Hillbillies kinda make their own rules of eddikit and pernunciation.  Hay, why not?!  We'uns' have the same rights to air upinions as eenywon elss.

    A redneck is me. I realize its supposed to be an insult, but I dont really care. I am damn proud of who I am, and where I am from.
    I have been barefoot and pregnant, with pride, 3 times.
    I love camo. I own a gun. I have once owned a lawn tractor, held together by duct tape. I spend my summers helpign hubby cut, split and stack fire wood. We raise our own chickens for eggs and food. You should see the people from the new housing development, driving by in their saabs, stare on butchering day....
    Four wheeling is fun, even better if you get stuck. In the words of Gretchen Wilson, I work hard, I PLAY HARDER.

    I consider most of the people in my home state of Vermont, way up north, to be rednecks. I use to fit the redneck brand perfectly.
    
    Drove around in a pickup with a rifle in the back window. Covered myself in camouflage and hunted with a bow. Camped out in the back of my pickup. Dressed all the time in black and red hunting jacket.
    
    I guess anyone who lives in the country could be called rednecks. City folks call anyone outside the city rednecks. But yeah, they usually are white folks.

    I first heard this word when I was watching "The Family Guy" -- some kind of people who love their trucks and have guns and then sit outside their houses with their sofa?? Is it a negative or a postive stereotypes??

          I AM uneducated.I DO own a gun. I have an old van seat outside, for sitting by the bonfire, I am white. Im not worried about the fact that somebody (like my mother or sister) might consider these to be reasons to look down on me.
          PrettyD, its supposed to be an insult.

    A redneck was originally a common worker living in the USA and of Anglo-Saxon or Anglo-Celtic linage. The redness of the neck especially the back of the neck comes from the performance of hard work out in the open. Over time redneck came to mean someone white, pig ignorant and racist.

    I've been called a redneck, a hillbilly, a hick, and a river rat many times. Most people don't use it as an insult though. Around here, it's a compliment, a way of life. When I think of rednecks, hillbillies, hicks, and river rats; I think of people who are resourceful, people who know how to survive without having much, people who work hard and know how to have fun while they're doing it. I'm proud to be called a redneck
