Do we have a doctor?

   I noticed the thread, and hoped amybe there was a hubber out there who could help me with a query, before I start delving further in to this.
   
   I had surgery on Monday, I am currently worried that I may have an infection, but I also have an interview at the US embassy which I really do not want to miss next Monday!
   
   Would appreciate it if there was anyone about who knows much about post op infections!

      If you think you have an infection, you need to see your doctor IMMEDIATELY so he can prescribe you an antibiotic. Even if you feel fine right now, post operative infections can spread quickly and cause many complications.

      What makes you think you have an infection?
      
      My brother almost lost his leg to a post-op infection. The suture area had a distinctive sweet odor, had some significant discoloration, and swelled to the point of his skin tearing around the stitches.

      I'm a surgical nurse..did you get your answer yet?
      If you have any gaps in your wound this could cause seepage of fluids back into your bloodstream which can cause Sepsis.
      Sepsis can be life threatening if not treated.

   This is rather sharp,
   
   I think I am going to head to the doctors tomorrow though, the surgery didn't go too well, suffered post op bleeding.
   
   I am on a huge amount of pain killers though, so I do not know if the change is chemical (the operation was hemorrhoidectomy, not pleasant!)

   e-mail him and I am sure he will respond. I am only a RN my recommendation is that you seek medical attention immediately if you believe you may possibly have a post-op infection or e-mail Benson who can assist you.

   Thanks for the advice, I will pass an email to that guy.
   
   I am debating whether a this is a case of a poorly washed area, or a possible infection, it also leaves me with the choice of a four hour wait in A&E now, or an early appointment tomorrow morning.
   
   It is a difficult choice, First though I am going to give the area a good wash and see if the smell is related to that, man this is not a pleasent topic of conversation, or whether it seems to be coming from inside.  There has been some blood seapage, not sure if this is normal at this stage or not, which is why i really do need a medical professional. I miss living in the city sometimes!

      You should certainly go to the ER or seek medical attention, no interview (even at the US embassy) is worth the risk!

         I am hoping for the best since an old blood clot just passed which was pretty vile, if that was the cause I should be fine, I am going to bang in a load of this antiseptic/aenesthetic gel they gave me, and head to the doctors in the morning.  If I start running a fever however, we are getting straight in that car!

   As an RN I also agree that you need to see a doctor immediately.  Can you call the surgeon right now?  Someone would be taking after hours calls if not him.  Tell him all your symptoms and he would probably give you advice which will include you coming in for an appointment.  That type of surgery is very painful and the pain may be eased by a sitting in a sitz bath if they have have told you that's okay.
   
   I don't know that you need an ER right now if you can see a doctor tomorrow, but don't ignore it as infections don't go away without treatment.  If you are running a high fever, are feeling faint, or have an excess amount of bloody drainage or pus, then it time for an ER now.

      The pain I can manage, I was advised to shower due to teh bleed though.
      
      It is infection that worries me, pain is temporary, an infection is serious!

   I rang the ward I was discharged from (as advised) but there was no pick up.  I managed to get in touch with a friend who advised me that A&E doctors may just refer me to my GP.
   
   My local GP is pretty easy for emergancy appointments though, will go and see him tomorrow, and will hopefully get a quick answer.

   Thank you to the well wishers though, I am sure I will be fine, it is just very annoying that a simple operation is going wrong at an important time for me!
   
   (P.S I apologise for any typos, on a fair few painkillers at the moment, hence my lack of new hubs!
