When making comments on hubs

should we be offering advice on spelling and grammar? I few I read through the feed a couple of days ago had some glaring and continuos mistakes. I wouldn’t want the person to feel insulted or obliged to let it through as an approved comment to sit under their hub forever, but  the mistakes look rushed and unpolished.

Just wonder how others deal with that when they see it. Tell them in comments or just email?

I e-mail them personally when checking for spelling and grammar and people do the same for me. All of us tend to make error sometimes so it is always nice to have a second pair of eyes. smile

I ignore it, substance is more important to me than perfect spelling and grammar.

Usually, this is the way to go, but HubPages it built around people reading your content, and potential money making. If people are reading it, wouldn't it be better for it to be as good as it can?

      Just musing, here.

It depends entirely on your purpose for being here, are you here to be read and gain a fan-base, or are you here to make money?

Perfect spelling and grammar are not necessarily important for making money.  In fact some webmasters find that writing terrible articles pays well, as visitors leave as quickly as possible by whatever means available, often via an ad, ka-ching!

Well there is a point to that too I suppose (in a roundabout way). But I really think it does Hubpages a disservice to have hubs in what is advertised as a writer's site full of typos and errors.
I prefer to read corect usage of grammar and spelling. It makes the finished article much more professional looking.
And yes I do typos too, and sometimes I don't notice them till months later, so I prefer if someone emails me to point them out.

I've never personally seen HubPages advertised as a 'writing' site,  but as a platform for sharing information.  I'm not suggesting that people fill their articles with typos deliberately, just pointing out that people often mistake HubPages for something it isn't.

If you've noticed all the dodgy ads for white teeth, etc. that appear in Hubpages share of the impressions then you'll be more than aware that HP care far more about cold hard cash, than the quality of your articles (as long as they meet minimum requirements).

    I take a dual approach:

If it's an otherwise "really good" hub, obviously written with a good deal of effort AND I find a mistake, I send a private message.  I'd want someone to do the same for me.

On the other hand, if it's truly amateurish, there are A LOT of errors, it was written in haste, etc. I do nothing.  If the author doesn't care to begin with, he/she won't care if I take the time to point out the errors.

I agree with you both. what we must not lose sight of is that English is not a native language for some people and they have trouble with spelling and syntax .

People have pointed out my spelling and grammar mistakes before (I think AEvans might have been one of them tongue) and I do appreciate it.  Sometimes I will spend so long writing a Hub that I will forget to go back over it with a spellchecker, often leaving me with a hub full of 'teh's!

I would consider pointing out errors to be a valuable favor.

Personally I think pointing out errors and grammar mistakes are best left for a site email. I would prefer not to have that visible in the comments thread really. But I would always appreciate someone pointing out any mistake I have made.

I use Google Chrome and it is great at underlining in red any spelling mistakes and a quick right click usually fixes them. Too bad it doesn't catch grammar mistakes too.

Google Chrome is a godsend for bad spellers. smile

I type "teh" and "writiing" all the time wink

Personally, I welcome any typo notifications through whatever method, a comment is quicker and that is what I would use.

Just dont expect the comment to be published or stay published

You live in an Asian country. What the hell do you know about English? Stick your nose where it belongs.

All these for telling the hubber that misspelt "the" to "teh" lol

so there is always a risk of a lashback you see.

I've had a spelling error pointed out and I appreciate someone saying something, otherwise, my hub would be here forever with flaws that no one is telling me about. I'd want to know. I use spellcheck most of the time.

Expression is more important than the ability to write perfectly, understandability is the bottom line. I would rather read interesting but poorly written stuff than the well written glossy little collections of 10 minutes research; although these probably make much more productive selling hubs.
